Tamiya 993 GT2 Re-Release RC Car

The Tamiya Porsche 993 GT2 is available for sale again. It is also damn near free compared to full size 993 ownership. I bought one on eBay from Omni Models for $149 after IL sales tax.

Spec's say it is 4wd, not authentic enough for me. :p

Tamiya is one of the better companies for scale reproductions, so go to your garage, measure your car, then divide by ten. That should be pretty close.

Is this it?

looks interesting

You can order it from somewhere legit like Tower Hobbies instead of a random eBay seller.

Image is not as delivered, lots of paint work to get it looking close to image.

Much assembly required...

Excalibur (out of production) was a more complete as sold deal:

I have the original GT2 kit from Tamiya and had the Excalibur as well. Yes-the Tamiya requires some time to put together. If you have not built a Tamiya RC kit before but if you have the patience and time to assemble and paint, the Tamiya kit is great and you can make it 2WD if you wanted to. The Excalibur is assembled and detailed and while it makes a great shelf queen, it is smaller than the Tamiya kit and is no where near the quality and performance.

You're comparing a hobby-level kit to what looks like a grocery store toy isle find.

And if someone doesn't have the chops to put together a Tamiya kit then I hope they refrain from any wrenching on a Porsche.

This is an RC Model so don't expect a high level of detail. You paint the body on the inside and the body is pinned to the chassis. These things are wicked fast and the smallest pebble will knock them off course. You need a large paved surface to operate these as well. The servo motors and controllers are usually sold separately, so that should be factored into the cost.

Part of the fun is building them. Definitely some additional costs, I think a controller will run $50.00 and a decent servo will add another $20. Far from a 1:18 scale model as far as detail goes. Tennis courts provide excellent racing venue for these things.

Hit a nerve did I :roflmao: You must shop in some pretty nice grocery stores.

Not sure where the comparison to put together an RC kit (which includes painting the shell) to get the kit to look as nice as the model in OP image (or the box image) and "wrenching on a Porsche" comes from, but the mind works in mystery ways...

Mechanical skills (put together) is one thing, painting an RC body shell to the level of quality in the image (or of the Excaliber) is another, which seems to have no connection to "wrenching on a Porsche" that I can surmise.

As I stated, Excalibur was more complete as sold. Not more mechanically complex, detailed, better, or only for those with low mechanical Porsche repair ability, just more complete as sold which still remains true. ;)

Painting them is relatively easy. I painted plenty as a kid. You apply the paint to the inside of the body. Just mask off the windows and use a rattle can on it. You can do a pretty horrible paint job and it'll still look fine on the outside. Just make sure you use paint that is for lexan so that it doesn't shatter when the body is bumped.
