I also have the Porsche version too but found the lighter connection a pain in the butt as it wasn't secure. Numerous times I thought the battery was fully charged only to discover it wasn't when the ignition was turned on. Gave up and just use the battery tender above.
+993 on the battery tender. 1/2 the cost and for 12+ years has been trickle charging the Ducati superbike, and now the 993!

I also use the Ctek. I like the kit that bolts to the battery. I just leave the small connector out all the time. It barely sticks out of the trunk cover. It has a nice cap to keep it clean, too. I close the frunk and the cord fits through without pinching.

I've used a few over the years. My favorite is Ctek: Multi US 7002.

If you are not going to see the car for a few weeks or longer you might want to connect directly to the battery.

And as others have mentioned, CTEK makes the one for Porsche, which is a mid range CTEK model that you can get for much less on Amazon, etc.

This is interesting. I have four battery tenders, a ctek, a Griot's, and two Porsche brand tenders. The two Porsche tenders are quite a few years old and are the cigarette lighter plug in kind. I have used them interchangeably with my 993 and my '02 996. I have never noticed any issues with either of them fitting in either car.

Awesome thanks so much Brad for the illustration!

+1 on CTEK hard wired leads to the terminals.

Then you can plug and unplug easily.

Plus the plug only fits on way around so preventing wrong polarity.

The Tender has the same terminal setup, with the charging unit staying in the garage, where it belongs. Only the wires to the battery terminals are in the car, with the anti-polarity crossing plug.

If you disconnect the battery, you will lose the smog readiness setting in the ECU and it is a pain to set it again. Ask me how it know.

I've got the Porsche one (made by CTEK) and pretty happy. Bummer they sell the battery attachment separately, but ended up getting a discount from the parts department as a PCA member so not bad at the end of the day.

I am thinking of getting one of these trickle chargers and operating via the trunk. If I do it that way, will I need to switch off the interior lights due to the trunk being slightly open? Will the immobiliser system still continue to operate with the trunk open too?

The cord can come out the front of the trunk (I route it out the bottom corner near the headlight) and you can easily close the lid on the cord with zero crimping. No worries with lights or immobilizer. I've done this for years.

Thank you. When the trunk is open, does that also activate the interior lights?

I route the wire to come out under the wiper. Plenty of places where the gap is large enough to accommodate. Just remember to buy an extension line for the CTEK maintainer if you use a vehicle cover.

Cord fits fine while closed. I just make sure it sits flat, while shutting lid. IF, you don't feel like shutting lid, just close hood latch, and lights will go out. Remember to release latch, before trying to shut!Name: IMG_0974.jpg

very helpful thread. related question... when do you put the trickle charger into service? meaning, how long of a storage period between using the car requires one?
