Depends on what you want to do, but ScanTool (freeware) is quite powerful, and the only other thing you need to use it beside a laptop is our friend Tore's T-OBD Diagnostic Interface, shown here:

Durametric makes an adapter plug to go from round to obd2 shaped
The Bergvill site also references an adapter:
Early 993 models, Porsche 964 and 968 need an 19-pin adapter, sold separately.

I have both scan tool and durametric. They both do some of the same things and some different things. Neither has all the functionality of the hammer. I use durametric on an odb1 964, my 997, and cayenne.

I have the older Durametric cable that only works with the earlier software version. It graphs dynamic data and provides access to the 4 modules, engine, brakes, hvac, air bag. The only issues I have found is that it doesn't always handshake and somtimes requires several attempts although this may simply be the old laptop I use and I get to the car's airbag module through the 964 menu, go figure?

Just the graphics interface of the Durametrics software might make it worth it to me; but I would wait and purchase a used enthusiast edition that had the 19 pin adapter cable, and 1 VIN remaining for $100.
Admittedly, I can't comment on any more usability than the flashing dash sequencing, but you can go to Durametrics site and view/download the functionality chart and bounce it against what you are able to execute with the flashing dash, and in essence answer your own question!

I have a 96 aka OBDII and have the durametrics setup. Coming from Audis, I was a little surprised with the lack of features with Durametrics, but thats because the Ross-tech setup for Audi/VW is pretty superb. When I learned about the dash sequence for the 993s, i thought it was pretty cool Porsche included diagnostics like that. I assume most standard owners dont know about the OBD I diagnostics since I've only seen it mentioned a few times on RL.
