Default ECU Flash vs Performance Chip Difference

I have a '95 993 c2 tip. I want to increase the performance and this brings me to a question :

What's the difference between ECU flash and new performance chip?

I was going to buy the Steve Wong chip but saw companies offering an ECU flash like ECU doctors or Fabspeed.

What's your recommandation?

I think I found my answer...

"Early model 993's (1994-1995) typically use a DME software chip, while the later cars (1996-1998) use an ECU software tune"

We use Steve Wong for our 993 ECU upgrades, he is considered by most and us to be one of the best in the business. Depending on the year of the 993, a simple chip replacement will suffice otherwise the chip information is then located in the ECU board itself and needs to be hard "flashed" to accomplish the tune. Here is the breakdown on that

"DME/ECU upgrades are available for all 993 Carrera models, but you must specify which style of DME/ECU your vehicle requires. Early model 993's (1994-1995) typically use a DME software chip, while the later cars (1996-1998) use an ECU software tune. Cars equipped with the "drive-block" feature (any model years) use an OTP-style ECU. You can verify that your car requires an OTP by inspecting the stickers on your factory ECU. If the number on the Porsche sticker is 99361866600, 99361866601, 99361866602, or 99361866603, then you will need to select the OTP ECU tuning option."

If you would like further information and/or place an order for the tune just give me a call at 215 646 4945 and just ask for John Gaydos

all US '95 and all RoW normally aspirated '94-98 993 use a 55 pin OBD1 DME which has a user replaceable chip in it. Steve Wong would be a great guy to buy a replacement chip from. You can specify a drive block chip or not, If you want to get rid of drive block the first step is to replace the chip w/ a non drive block chip. The chips are physically interchangeable it's just that a drive block chip has an input and out put lacking in the non drive block chip, If a non drive block chip is used in a drive block car, the starter relay is still controlled by the drive block and still still stops the car from starting unless the fob button is used. To completely by pass the drive block a new starter relay is used. I've never tried this but I believe that if a drive block chip is used in a drive block car it won't start because the chip is expecting an unlatching signal from the drive block which never arrives.

all '96 turbo 993 and all US n/a 993 use an 88pin OBD2 DME which cannot be flashed

all '97-98 turbo and '97-98 n/a 993 have a DME which can be flashed, a pro is needed. As first the chip has to be unsoldered, then flashed and then resoldered into the DME.

JMHO, but a GOOD reflash/chip makes a bigger difference in performance than installing aftermarket mufflers.

My experienced opinion with Steve doing mine with a noticeable performance difference with lower and smoothed out torque. Doing away with blocker worth the money just for that! Call Steve!

+1, the 993 exhaust is one of the better stock ones out there, a cat by pass would be useful to eliminate heat as much as for flow.

if going to ITBs and happier cams then a good header system would be worthwhile, stock or stockish not so much.

Interested but it needs to be for an early 95 (not equipped with drive block). PM sent

Make sure its for the same ECU you have in your car: i.e. .163 or .674.

I will personally recommend Steve Weiner and Rennsport Systems for a 993 chip, as another option not mentioned here.

I've used Steve Wong in the past for tuning on my old '84, so nothing against him. I just preferred using Rennsport for the 993 tune.

Agree with this! I've got Steve's ECU flash and I felt it gained me a nice bump in hp/tq, not mind blowing, but enough to to feel it. When paired with a sport cat like Fabspeed or FD, it enhanced the improvement even more. It just woke the car up. Just my .02.
