what is your favorite 993 model?
Hi All,
just curious about what you guys think of the different 993 models / years and what are your favorites as far as performance, fun to drive.
Honestly, i owned all 993s models and all years except the RS and GT2 and think that the best cars are the 95 non varioram C2 and the turbo models
Mechanically, the 95 are much better engines; all the varioram engines i owned tended to run not that smoothly and many had secondary air injection problems.
The varioram is prone to air leaks whereas the older 95 do not have this problem.
There are also more o2 sensors and a complex emission system which tends to cause issues. The HP gain between the 2 models is marginal and impossible to notice
To me the real dealbreaker for the varioram cars are the transmissions.
Long gear ratios trannies were fitted in later cars after 96 to reduce emissions; as a result the cars feel sluggish and unresponsive.
Earlier cars are by a mile more fun to drive.
Then there is the AWD; honestly, unless you live in a all year rainy/ icy country, i don’t see the point. 911 are not designed for that type of environment anyway, and you’re better off with a cayenne.
AWD makes the cars sluggish and heavier and is a fun killer
4S, 2S are pretty but way over rated. They are heavy and slow. The tires are very wide and create a lot of inertia; loss of performance. These are basically 993 Turbo without the turbo engine. Result is very mediocre.
To conclude, if i had to choose, one, i’d go for a 95 C2 convertible which is very nimble with its reinforced chassis / lower center of gravity.
Add the short shift option or kit to your car, a RS clutch / flywheel, and you have a real race car that will leave behind all other naturally aspirated 993s
The turbo is also great and much faster, but also expect much bigger maintenance bills, and not necessarily more fun to drive than a C2 cab with few mods

I think you might have just as well thrown some rocks at a bee's nest.
Are brunettes better than blondes or redheads?
How many jalapenos are too many?
I think each is model special in their own way and the differences at normal road speeds do not warrant kicking any model to the curb.
For instance I'm not really a cab guy and am considering selling mine, but every time I drive her I find I really enjoy it and ask myself why would I even consider doing such a thing.

Seems like all guys owning 96's and up have already had any arguments shot down for owning one.....LOL. I have a dredded 96 and have been pleased with the performance and reliability thus far. I have had the opportunity to drive earlier cars and I honestly didn't notice the closer ratio gearing.... But I do seem to notice the extra power in my car at least. On a twenty year old car however, there is probably more variation between individual examples than simply varioram or pre-varioram designs. I can see validity in complaints about some of power gaps in the tranny. It does seem that Porsche designed the tranny as more an Autobahn cruiser. That being said, I love the 3rd to 4th shift on my 96 by the way...it seems to be perfect for passing. Anyway every 911 has it's peculiarities...an awfully cool car in any flavour. Cheers

My favorite model is a 1997 Glacier White C4S
Even though it is the overrated WB model with the problematic varioram and the sluggish AWD that takes the fun out of it
