Teddysam,

What shop did the work? Since you're in CA, and I'll be looking to get my car smogged, might be interesting to know. If you are willing to share cost info, please PM me.

Cheers

The comments on the 95, OBDI system are all accurate.

SAI code(s) will never be thrown on the OBDI system and there are no performance issues on any 993 with clogged SAI ports; its the OBDII system that throws a CEL that needs to be cleared to pass smog.

Because of the variables involved in the SAI system, I see a few contributing causes but no clear cut root cause. They are, in no specific order...

▪Non-functioning SAI check valve. (replace every 10k mi.)
▪Overfilling of engine oil
▪Valve guide issues

My $.02

nine9six,
So to sume it up......my failure of Ca. smog had little to do with SAI blockage but rather the SAI check value? along with valve guide issues? IE..leaks/compression....is that correct?

Also, am I to assume that my Ca. Smog fail had to do more with valve guide issue, compression and leaks rather than clogged SAI ports.....

If the engine was in as poor shape as you said, i.e. low compression in 4 cylinders, that is likely the cause of the failed smog test, not SAI.

If the only problem you had was clogged SAI ports, then it should not have failed smog.

Since I had the top end rebuilt what is the likelihood of this happening again? I.E....bad compression/leaks

There are cars here that have gone 300,000+ miles with original engine.

Just take care of her. Change oil every 3-5k miles with the correct oil - M1 20W50, or Brad Penn etc... - and you should not have to do it again. Assuming it was done properly.
