Rear Spoiler Clunk
Guys,
I'm looking for some input please. I've searched the forum and did not find relevant posts.
Have a '95 C2 coupe w 43k miles.
Loud clunk (first time it happened, it scared the crap out of me and I thought I lost my engine) occurs from spoiler as it retracts to rest position upon car slowing to stop from speed.
Manual function of spoiler works perfectly and I can not reproduce the clunk unles driving.
Thoughts and assistance greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-Cam

When, in 2005/06, I had a sound like this I too thought (hoped) it was spoiler-related I ended up with a bent piston rod. To this day I have no clue how it happened.

I hope not!
Have done some crude diagnostics:
Sometimes the clunk is loud and sometimes not.
Only clunks when spoiler retracts. So, when I'm driving around town but not at enough speed to allow for spoiler deployment, there is no clunking at all.
Also, if I manually deploy the spoiler such that it stays deployed until I manually retract it, and then drive at speed, no clunking is heard when I slow to a stop ( because the spoiler has stayed deployed.)
Therefore, I think it's the spoiler.

If it is the bearing wouldn't he hear the clunk not only when he's driving, but also when he's sitting still and manually working the spoiler mechanism?

If the spoiler bearing is worn out you'll usually hear a loud grinding noise as it retracts. Never heard of one clunking though.
You might want to check if there are any missing or loose bolts in the mechanism, eg numbers 8, 21 or 36:

After you manually deploy, what happens when you manually retract it? Clunk or no?

If I keep the spoiler permanenty deployed, there is no clunk.
If I drive at slower speeds thereby not giving it a chance to deploy, there is no clunk.
It is not a grinding noise, but rather a distinct loud clunk.
Will keep you all posted.

Could it be that the top switch limiter is not working , hence the spoiler controller unit does not shut down the spoiler motor on time ?
Worth inspecting the teeth on the quadrant... Second photo on my thread here http://forum.porsche-club-ireland.co...74120#msg74120
Or the flex cable skipping?
Just few thoughts...

I mentioned the bearing as a possibility. But Leander is right, if that's the case it should clunk every time. Is your spoiler wall intact? Maybe while driving it binds as it deploys/closes? Just a thought...
