Default DIY Tiptronic Rear Differential Fluid Change- w/pics

First, many thanks to previous Rennlisters, especially Geolab for the helpful information as I prepared for this DIY. This is my first experience with a 993 Tip. Rear diff fluid change in a 6sp is well documented, but not much for the Tip in term of pics in the archive. Hope some of you visual folks find the photos helpful. This DIY is very simple and pretty much mirrors the manual tranny DIY. Access is from passenger rear wheel opening.

Supplies:
1. Torque wrench
2. Several extensions totaling approximately 12" long
3. 10mm hex head socket
4. One quart of 75W-90 or 75W-140 of your choice. I went with the 140 per George's recommendation.
5. Aluminum sealing rings x 2. Same ones for oil drains and manual tranny.
6. Fluid pump with clear tubing long enough to reach the differential.
7. Drain pan and shop towels

Steps:
1. Safely place your car on jack stands ( Atlas lift if ya got one ). Make sure it's level for accurate fluid drainage and refill.
2. Remove passenger rear wheel and transmission undertray.
3. Pop off black triangular plastic on lower control arm.
4. Insert extension with 10mm bit onto FILL plug.
5. Attach ratchet from the bottom through the A-arm, and loosen the plug.
6. Now go under the car with the same 10mm bit, remove the DRAIN plug.
7. Make sure your drain pan is handy and ready to catch that very aromatic old gear oil.
8. Observe/examine the drain bolt magnet for metallic fragments while waiting for the molasses to drain. It's normal to have very fine particles at the tip.
9. Go grab a drink...
10. Clean both DRAIN and FILL plugs, and replace sealing rings with the correct side facing out ( some OCD summab!tch brainwashed me- you know who you are )
11. I let it drained a good 15-20 minutes. Wipe area clean, then reinstall DRAIN plug. Torque to about 25 lb/ft. I couldn't find any torque spec so figured it couldn't be too far from the 6sp tranny spec.
12. Insert clear tubing, and pump in approximately 0.9 L of gear oil or until oil begins to drip out. (Warm gear oil pumps/flows much easier)
13. Reinstall FILL plug and torque to about 25 lb/ft. Wipe area clean.
14. Reinstall undertray, triangular A-arm plastic, and wheel.

Anyone know of a post that deals with servicing the Tiptronic fluid?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi,

For 97 993 with Tiptronic,
do you need to use the differential fluid with "limited slip" or plain (if such a fluid exits)?
All I saw at the parts store were with "limited slip".

If anyone can respond my question, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Thank you.

The instruction posted above was great.
The fill plug was stuck and I removed the heater pipe to get the plug removed otherwise it went without any problems.
I used a brake cleaner spray to clean the area after all done.

Thank you again.
