Default Stereo Volume issue...Kenwood head unit

96 993TT
stock Hifi amp and speakers
Kenwood Excelon KDCX794 headunit

This headunit has a max volume scale of 35. To hear it clearly with windows up, I need to be at 24. With windows down, its more like 28.

This seems odd. I'm guessing this may be an impedence issue.

Is there a way to rectify this, or is this generally normal?

Thanks.

I have that same setup using a different kenwood deck doing exactly the same thing. I would say it's most likely due to the nokia amp. One day I'll rip it out and rewire.

Aftermarket heads and power amps sometimes have level adjustments on their set-up menu.

Check to see if your loudness option is set to on in settings. Happened to me with new kienzle cd head unit. Just a suggestion.
