here I go putting the pistons in
I had a piston rod clip installer from Porsche for my 964 engine but the clips on the 993 have a 90 degree turn on them so this bugger won't work, i tried modifying it but no luck
this has to be one of the most frustrating jobs for me, i think i said the same sentence when doing the 964
anyway i saw somewhere a hand driver for inserting rod clips, so i made one kind of similar its crud but it worked on the first, second or 3rd try. not bad for me

i took a Phillips screw driver and filed a notch on the end that would hold the clip from almost slipping and ripping your finger off

Here it is

its starting to look like a motor again!

More motor shots
Cam housing tightened down then head bolts
toque down (4 times checked) plus the 90Degree turn

then cam housing removed and lactate 574, oil returns (Viton seals)
Then housing torqued

sorry the sequence is wacked

Nice work, looks like you'll be back on the road by the time summer arrives in late July!

Those clips were a bugger, glad I bought a few spares because a couple of them launched, I presume, into low earth orbit, never to be seen again. Smart move to cover the case openings, I only figured that one out after a very close call, thankfully didn't have to fish around in the case with the magnet...

You've probably thought of this already, but if not, now would be a good time to replace the alternator brush / voltage regulator unit.

Hey Brian
Just a few years back Carla and I were driving to Calgary in the 964 C4
About 10 K from Calgary on #7 all the lights started flickering in the dash (ALL of them)
I was thinking the wurst We were driving up the hill on 16th ave and it died
I finally figured out it was the alternator

Thanks for the reminder Brian, I think I'll be taking your advice
Cheers
Glenn

Looking good Glenn, might be able to make it to the last cars and coffee of the year in the 993 at this rate! My 911 goes in to get a damage appraisal at the end of the week, might be 993 shopping if it doesn't go well.

Looking good!

I especially like the yellow fan... i did the same thing during my rebuild a couple of years ago, theory being it's easier to see so is less of a safety hazard.

Did you paint or powder coat?

Could I ask what the details of the check you make against the crank?, I've installed a new pilot bearing in my flywheel and just sat it flush as it appeared when removed.

Any input appreciated

Lol yes having lost a finger to a blade when i was a tot has brought that idea to the forefront

No powder coat this time, i just went with a can of motor spray paint

i used a digital depth gauge and also started with the pilot a little high and slowly tapping it to flush with crank
you could use a form of paint too to test depth

good luck
