Edit:
If you have a tiptronic, myflat6 has the right part number
If you have manual transmission, part number is:
996 606 105 00
From PET / katalog illustration 901-03 (under electrical section, not transmission as one might think).
Apparently other parts required if replacing:

Bringing this back from a long nap...
Can someone explain why when replacing the crank position sensor, the additional 3 parts are required? Is it bc the new/replacement part was redesigned for the 996 and the sensor's wiring scheme is different? I have one at home ready to install and found it to be a direct plug-in.
Thanks for your input!

I read the new sensor has a different connector. You need new crimp pins and housing to connect to wiring harness.
For the price, I'd replace just for a new uncorroded connector
you want it to last another 20yrs

Finally got around to replacing this little guy and performing a side by side comparison. Long of it... the new part, also known as pulse sender in the PET, was a direct fit for my 96C2 without the need for the additional parts.
Replacement was pretty easy once you know where to look - driver's side, just ahead of the wheels. Hope this will solve some of my intermittent starting issues.
The plug is located behind the blower on the driver's side. Sidenote - i found the circled blue line unplugged.
Old on the left, new on the right.
Old on the left, new on the right.
All buttoned up (Black wire).
Now, onto finishing the spark plugs.

Alex, or other learned Pelicanite,
I have a '95, and the old style plug. It cracked at the mounting bracket in the engine compartment.
Is the old style plug definitely nla?
Debating a plug repair and run with it. I will grab a pic with my phone and update the thread in a moment.
Thought it might be good to show the earlier style of plug.
And for those who have done this, isn't the broken plug part of the harness, not the CPS that is replaceable?
Any tips on its replacement if i am correct?
O'Neal
