Default Spoiler bearing grinding again...

Replaced the bearing with a sealed 625-2RS bearing. Three years later, it is grinding again while the spoiler closes, for the final 2 seconds (of about 5 seconds total).

Anyone else experience this?

Considering replacing with silicon nitride (Si3N4) bearings, cost about 5 times the steel versions but supposed to be stronger and smoother. Anyone ever use this type in this application, or others eg bike wheels?

Mine was doing that too, so I pulled the 2 wires from the relay under the glovebox and converted it to manual only. Now it only goes up/down when I use the switch. I got tired of the up/down at every stoplight.

Sorry, don't have an answer...I'm a recent 993 cadet, and mine is doing the same - only on closing. So, I'm interested in a good solution too.

I can't find the write up on pulling out the 2 wires from the relay to convert to manual mode, but here's a write up on a noisy spoiler fix:

Gt3'er, there are a few DIYs on this out there, this is the one I used:

Edit: goofballdeluxe beat me to it

Another pointer was to use good quality heat shrink tubing around to replace the cable sheathing that is almost certainly deteriorated.

Also, buy sealed bearings instead of crappy open bearings that Porsche inexplicably used here.

And I suppose my advice, based on recent experience, is don't cheap out on the bearing, buy the best quality one you can find.

Before I fixed the grinding I would just raise / lower manually to limit the cycles (lots of go fast / stop on my commute). But when I did the fix, the absence of the grinding gave me such pleasure that I just let it go up & down to its heart's content.

I especially get a kick out of watching people in the car behind behind me react to the spoiler retracting. The best ones are the young punks in jdm jap scrap. They are always thrilled to see the spoiler going down. You can just tell that what they really want is to have a Porsche one day... and I hope they will.

Brian, please post up a link if you find a bearing you like. I installed one of mojorizing programmable spoiler modules - I went with up at 75 with delay, force up 80, down under 20 for 20 secs which will get me thru a rural 2 or 4 way stop. He only had 8 but someone else was going to make these, I can't remember who it was. It really limits the wear on the whole mechanism.

Search for boman993 spoiler module mod. Pretty easy to do

Edit: Tried looking for it but no luck. Jakob must have taken it down.

P-daddy, there are a few threads on the 964 forum for a mod that sounds like the boman993 one. Sounds like the green and red/white wires get unplugged from the spoiler switch and it turns into full manual. One example, which also explains what those wires are for:

https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ated-only.html

However it is unclear whether the wiring colour scheme is the same for the 993, or even for all 964s. Also there are reports of problems with reversing this mod. So YMMV, proceed with caution and at your own risk.

JB 911, there is a diy that sounds similar to Mojorizing's reprogrammed module but it is more than I have time or patience for:

http://members.rennlist.org/mojorizing/content.htm

Sure would be great to find one of these modules at a price that is somewhat competitive with simply pulling two pins from the switch...

Squirting with corrosion block has always cured the grinding for me. 115k miles and no bearing replacement, yet.

Brian- I've done this mod several times on 993s. The wiring color schematic is the same for 964 and 993.

I have the same grinding on the way down. I too stop my spoiler from going up and down during start/stop commutes but I just click the up button 1x once the spoiler is up and it will remain that way until I turn off and restart the car.

I didn't have to pull any wires. Is my spoiler setup unique??

Totally normal. Its a feature to prevent the up/down. Only drawback is that it stays up when you shut the car down.
