Default Doubts about OEM speakers

Hi!
First of all, my apologies: I spent at least an hour searching and browsing through old threads, but I'm 99% sure there is no answer to this question.
If there is, and I didn't find it, I apologize.

I'd like to upgrade the audio system of my 993 (nothing complicated, just a recent head unit and decent speakers). I do prefer the sound of the engine, but on long trips with my wife, some music would be nice

I found a nice Becker Monza, but I'm not sure about the speaker size.

My car is a 1995 Carrera 4 Cabriolet without any optional sound system, and I'm 100% sure the previous owner didn't customize the standard setup.
On the other hand, in all the threads I've read, I didn't find descriptions that suit my car audio setup - this is the reason why I'm a bit puzzled.

In each door there are two speakers, one (in the bottom, front part of the door) has a round grille. The other one - I guess it's a tweeter - is smaller, round as well, in the top part of the door.
No speakers in the rear seats.

Compared to the image linked here below, the tweeter is identical, but the main speaker is smaller, round and... "not double" (sorry, I don't know how to describe this...):
https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...3-interior.jpg

In these images, on the other hand, the speakers look 100% identical to mine:

http://356-911.com/shop/carforsale/993cabwhite/dash.JPG
http://www.speedwellautomotive.com/n...3-Karl-003.jpg (these ones are JBLs, but the size looks identical)

Now... the question is: what should I buy? I don't mean brands/models, but... descriptions of what I should buy.
The bottom ones are standard speakers? Which size?
What about the tweeters?

I tried using this configurator http://www.crutchfield.com/g_400/All...akers.html?l=C but I can't understand why they suggest both 5-1/4'' and 6-1/2'' speakers... And no tweeters.

Sorry again and thanks for your help - I don't want to rely on a car stereo specialist here... I'm sure they would insist on installing 34 amplifiers

Thank you!

UPDATE: there was an additional thread I didn't spot during the search... My door is 100% identical to this one, but the speaker size used by this forum member is not clear to me... https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...l#post10991975

Try Gert Carnewell (do a search on this site). I've purchased a lot of stuff from him and have always been pleased. He lists some speakers for your car.

Thank you, I've noticed this solution in old threads: http://carnewal.com/products/P93/p93...s-for-P93-Cars

My doubt is still about the size (6-1/2'' in this case)...

The reason why I'm puzzled is that on one hand I think my car is 100% stock, no hi-fi option, on the other hand many users mention rear speakers for the "non-hi-fi version" cabriolet 993s, and I don't have rear speakers, so... I just wanted to be sure I buy the right speakers.

Another doubt: if I buy 2-way speakers (6-1/2'' or 5-1/4''), what should I do with the stock tweeters?

I installed new 2-way speakers in the front doors, and just left the old tweeters in place, but not connected. To remove the old tweeters would require recovering of the interior door trim.

The speakers I used are Kicker KS5250 5.25", an exact fit replacement for the factory ones, even reused the original grills. Not audiophile quality, but to me they sound very nice.

Thank you very much!
So basically you just "cut" the connection and leave the original tweeters where they are...
The mystery is now almost solved

Andi, the difference you see in the pictures is difference between Hi-Fi system and regular system. Hi-Fi system has an extra housing behind the grille with two speakers in there, woofer and mid-range. This is what's shown on your first picture: https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...3-interior.jpg

Next, the question about rear speakers. You most likely do have rear speakers. They are shallow 4" speaker on the sides in front of the rear seat covered by the same panel that covers cab side transmissions.

Third, what you want to replace all this Nokia crap with (it was cheap paper crap 20 years ago, even more so now). Your best bet is to go with a good pair of separates for the front doors. Don't worry about rears, they are just fill, plus you would nto find good speakers shallow enough to fit the rear panels and not interfere with cab frame.

I'm partial to Focals but there are a bunch of other very good speakers in a price range you are comfortable with. If you go with separates, you would install a crossover somewhere on the door next to the woofer. If you go with a single coaxial speaker, the crossover is built in but you end up with a tweeter well below your knee looking and projecting into your shin bone. Is that a good placement for directional tweeter? Not really.

Having said all that, it's a cab and I don't believe that good sound can be had in a cab, certainly not on a reasonable budget. As Bobby said above, even a decent pair of speakers installed in a low door location would sound fine.

Thank you very much, I really really appreciate!
One final question: if I follow your advice and go with separates (sounds 100% reasonable!), which size should the tweeters be?
Thanks again!

Andi, that would depend. You can do two things with tweeter: Try to re-use the "wart" OEM housing by taking out the old tweeter and putting in a new one or install a regular new tweeter by slightly enlarging an existing hole in the door and door card.

The problem with first approach is that it's not easy to get the tweeter out of its pod but the real reason is that it's hard to find a very small tweeter that would fit (about 1" or 25 mm, if I remember correctly). If you go for second approach, this is a set similar to what's in my cab now: http://vkcaraudio.com/cp/html/images/1287718846.jpg This particular set comes with 45 mm tweeters. Here's the spec sheet for the tweeter with dimensions for a better understanding: http://www.zalytron.com/Specs/6_k3pTweeter.pdf

I did end up with an extra set of tweeters and crossovers from the 165KF set somehow sitting in my closet, but that's another story. Should probably sell instead of looking at it on the shelf for 4 years now

Thank you very much to you all!

I eventually bought a used Becker Monza 7887 for 200$, and a pair of JBL 2-way, 5-1/4'' coaxial speakers for 60$...

I was about to buy a separate tweeter solution, but then I thought that with coaxial ones I can probably manage to do everything on my own... The sound will be a bit worse, but definitely better than the current setup (Blaupunkt cassette player and Nokia speakers...).

Thanks again for your precious help.
