The small silver unit under the drivers seat(passenger seat on US cars), small metal box with two connector plug's going into one end and a blade fuse fitted in the middle between the plugs which causes the interior lights etc to stop working if it blows ?

Definitely listed as a comfort control unit (CCU) over here.

maybe it's different on UK models, as we dont have the integrated alarm system like the US does ( UK cars had alarms/immobiliser fitted by Hamilton and Palmer to meet UK regulations when they were new)

Interesting. Perhaps in the UK "comfort" refers to the central locking system and interior courtesy light functions, and not climate?
