Default How much axle play is acceptable?

My car is making another weird clunky noise. Mostly in reverse when i push the clutch in and occasionally on starts if I don't slip the clutch just right. DS inner CV is showing signs of grease leaking out and the play in/out seems excessive with it almost bottoming out when I push it towards the trans. Found some old threads that some point towards flywheel/clutch but that's all new with all updated pieces. Is this something that could be axle related? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a LSD?

Well there seems to be excessive play in the diff and it's quite close to the noise I was hearing.

That does not look good. I asked about LSD since my 993 has it. When I back out of my driveway and depress the clutch before stopping rearward motion, I hear some 'clacking'. But it's never changed in almost 10 years and 35,000 miles of vigorous use.

Yeah this has noticeable clunking noise almost anytime I press the clutch in. If I shift into 2nd and put the gas down a bit more forcefully it clunks. If I roll the throttle on very smoothly I can't keep it from clunking but it's a delicate situation. I'm assuming the diff is shot

Default Play

This is what I have. Hasn't changed for a while and from what I have been able to find, some cars have it. I'm just keeping an eye on it, if it gets worse, I'll deal with it at that time.

Be aware the differential can be serviced without removing the engine and possibly not needing to remoxe the transmission. The inexpensive fix may be to get a used standard diff as many shops have these on hand from customer upgrades and will sell them for a couple hundred bucks.

Yeah this is where I'm at but don't know what I'm looking for besides obvious damage to which there is none

Drained fluid and screened it and besides very few minuscule flakes I see nothing there either. The pinion (?) has no up/down or side to side play. The outer cv joints have a bit of movement, one seems to be slightly worse than the other but that's really just in my hands on the bench so possibly could be worse in car.

Could it be from lowering the car? I had 17" wheels before with a much meatier tire. I went to 18" wheels as well as rennlines billet strut mounts which seem to make the car sit lower. Instead of raising rears I just lowered the fronts to match. Also I can get to to clunk at low speeds at a very light on/off throttle.

Doesn't seem like excessive slop in the spider gears. Pinion had no weird movement either.

Did you ever find out what caused that excessive axial play?
