OT: LA to SF - I-5 or 101?
Hi All,
At long last, I will be reunited with the p-car this weekend. After almost 3 yrs in NYC, I'll be picking up my car from my family's garage in SoCal and driving it up to my new home in SF.
I'm doing the trip solo on Sunday, so unfortunately don't have the time to take HWY-1 (clearly the best option!). I'm wondering if it's worth the extra hour or two to take HWY-101 instead of I-5. What do y'all think?

101 = more curves, lower speed limites, better places to stop and eat.
I-5 = almost zero curves, higher (but not high enough) speed limits, nowhere to eat.
101 = relax and enjoy driving the Porsche
I-5 = it will be a shorter journey but the monotony will make it feel longer.

101 is better but heavily patrolled, radar detectors help but they use a lot of aircraft as well.

You can do a combination in many ways,
Cut from 5 to 150, 126 then 33 back to 101, but time consuming,
You can also take 46 across through paso Robles to 101
And go by the James dean memorial, but no twisted really.
101 isn't reslly that much longer unless you get stuck in Santa barbara, which is typical.
You save time on 101 if you cut across on 154.
My vote is 101

The only thing I5 has going for it (besides the somewhat quicker drive) is the Harris Ranch Restaurant. If you'll be driving by near dinner time, and you like beef, its a worthwhile stop.

A decent compromise between shortest trip and scenic trip is to drive I-5 north and exit at 198 Coalinga, take 198 west to 101 and then 101 N. 198 is a fun little road and a decent way to break up the monotony of either freeway. 198 is a pretty fun and twisty road.
***WARNING: 198 can be driven fast and it is full of twisties, but it is a semi-truck shipping route and there are some sudden blind turns and elevation changes on the drive. Drive too close to your limits and you and your your Porsche might become a new grill ornament for an east-bound semi. ***
If you have more time at that point in the trip, turn right on Route 25 off of 198 before 101. 25 is a very fun/fast road that leads to Hollister where you can reconnect with the 101.

101 for all the above reasons
Once you get to Santa Barbara consider driving the San Marcos Pass hwy 154 if you're open to a clool little detour, it'll drop you back onto 101 farther north. From 154 you can also take hwy 246 through Solvang which is a touristy old Dutch looking town.

After seeing (and smelling) all those poor cows standing outside in the blazing sun in their death camps by the freeway, how can you possibly enjoy eating a steak at Harris Ranch?
