Default intro thread ... darkside NineXI

just a quick and dirty (8 years in a shed with only 11k kms added to the clock and little cleaning) intro as I begin the 993 learning curve
and say "Hey There" to this hallowed forum!

a friend called today and said this needed to be sold urgently at a discount if it could be quick
... gladly my trusted shop had a lift free and in about the 3 hours it took for a PPI and leakdown
- oh and the obligatory proper warm up for that in a nearby valley road - we had a deal

I'm away for 2 weeks so the next time I see her she'll be:
1. bubble free, paint corrected & gleaming like only midnight black can gleam
2. have working hood and decklid shocks
3. corner balanced wheels and balanced tires
4. replaced left chain cover gaskets & gearbox + engine oils
4. ... and nothing else i.e. no mods here, she's stock and perfect the way she came

so that's the story ...
feel really blessed to be able to have a white RS type 964, a mint Speed Yellow GT3
and this new addition from the darkside along side in the garage!

oh and just wondering but how do you fit a vario-ram to these primitive 94's?

A diamond in the rough - congrats, and welcome! Pics are a bit vague, but the interior looks minty!

lol ilko ... more than a few of the ideas are your fault!
but I'm going subtle rather than hardcore, toned-stealth-cruiser over rabid-track-rat

So ....
Steve Wong, Window tint a couple tones, 15-20mm lower, SSKit & helm joints, old school radio, black SRP pedals

rather than ...
LWFW, Solid Bushes&Mounts, Rothsport shifter, 30-40mm lower, vario ram, 96+ suspension, GT2 splitter, Guard LSD, 18" BBS
(as much as I appreciate all that choice stuff)

thanks for the welcome!

That interior looks new. A good paint correction specialist can do magic to that neglected midnight black. Keep us posted. Oh congrats

yes the interior definitely made it an easy decision P-d

a few more pics from the owners books ...

any rare/interesting codes I'm missing? Is the "003" just faded out?

-030 sounds good - sports suspension ... will look for Bill's description
-220 & 224: 40% diff, auto (not sure what auto means?)
-139/340 rare in South Africa - L&R seat heat! will try that out in winter!
-398: the 17s were ordered
-650 moon roof ... that's a new one
-659 not 660 so I guess that means ODB1 (work with the ScanTool and Tore's 964 cable?)

or meaning re the Betriebs (factory, works) number?
L741 is factory black .. but the "LT"?

I am the 5th owner ... but she feels fresh to me!

Regarding the 030 option, the sway bars and drop links are different and so are the springs/struts. That said the struts are probably due for a replacement (if they're still OEM original) and whether you keep using the 030 springs is a matter of personal preference/constraints due to which aftermarket struts you choose (e.g. PSS10s replace the use of OEM springs).

The sway bars are good for spirited street use so plan on keeping those. You might want to check the drop link joints to see if they're tired and need replacing. I'd inspect the steering rack and tie-rods while you're under there too. GL!

Spot on spyder - the drop link bushes are going; nothing at pelican like a polyurethane bush to pop in there ... Wevo? Suncoast? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the drop links are all or nothing. Either replace the OEM links in full or go aftermarket (Tarrett or Rennline). I believe the aftermarket options come with replaceable bushing/boots, which would be useful next time around...

LoL Geordie .. thanks an consider me forewarned

Sorry to see that vario-ramed beast is moving on but glad to see someone I know who does great DIY pics is going to be around soon

____________________________________________________________________

I took the car for a last shakedown today ... just a few hundred kms
and there are a couple more issues to report:

1. the fuel pump noise is there with a full tank (haven't checked the filter yet) ... will this work as a replacement?

BCH 61944 summit racing listing

2. there is a faint mildewy smell from the fan driven air ... is it common to have the aircon leaving condensation in the system and this sits on the pollen filter or somewhere making a breeding ground for the mildew? I ran the heat at full with sunroof (sadly ) and windows wide open but as it was 28 deg C today that wasn't easy to do for the whole drive. Maybe flush the system with ozone?

Otherwise the overwhelming impression of the 993 is simply "impressive" ..

- the exhaust is stock but once hot and driven with spirit it sounds great with pops and overrun gurgles especially in 3rd

- the gears are a bit long but I'm used to my RS/no plastic shifter in the 964 RSe (emulate), the 6-GT3s stubby notches and the cup's super positive short throw, so no doubt it'll feel long but the gears are perfect (no trouble with 2,3 and only a very vague sense that 1st could maybe pop out of gear sometime later; mounts likely need to be checked)

- and while an RS shift mod sounds right I'm still really thinking that a stock car is the best way to hold value in the 'luftgekuhlt' or any classic for that matter

- the grip is great like the 64s and the LSD feels better round the bumpier bends despite tires that are unused but 4 years old and the car telgraphs its rear-swinging intentions quite clearly, stays controlled and calm under monkey harris type cornering

- I will have to respray the one rain gutter panel with peel and the front cowl where the bubble are but I have noticed repeatedly that few 'restored' cars don't look restored if you know what I mean.

Whatever you all convince me to do with your GT2 Evo builds and 'that took no time and feels amazing' build threads, this is a road car and a cruiser and that's that. I'm putting my efforts into taking another 50kg out of the 3.8 RSe (yes the entire HVAC and sunroof is coming out) and that'll sate the mod-gods for now

Please point me to the key threads or any of your favorites if they are any any lying around
- like Jeffrey's Race car sticky on the 964 forum (my education), but for garage queens!
