Default What's this Performance Chip?

I replaced my performance chip with a Steve Wong.

The old one is a Racing Pro... What's their reputation? What's its value?

For me, all these chips for a normally aspirated car just add a very small amount of power or claimed improved drivability. For this reason, I would not put an aftermarket chip in. If your car's previous owner already had one installed and your car seems to run properly I would not be in such a hurry to swap it out.

so that page you posted says it adds 18 HP and "Top Speed Limit, is removed."

i wasn't aware that there was a computer-controlled top speed limit on our cars.

The computer-controlled top speed is fuel cut at redline in 6th. Some where around 168.

I think chips are bull**** but I guess they can "claim" that by bumping the redline fuel cut.

You wont be able to sell the chip unless you know what octane gas it was written for.
ive had 3 different chips in my 95 and the last one I installed was the best one, it was a Steve Wong chip.

Those sell for $39.99 on ebay If you want to donate it to the greater good, send it to me and I'll let you know how far they push the timing over stock, and if they actually do anything other pushing the wot map.

Nothing bs about chip tuning other hp claims. Folks have been twisting mechanical distributors for more timing advance since the '50s, or before. Tuning for max cylinder pressure while still controlling temperature to avoid bumping into knock isn't a complicated concept.

Bottom line, buy one of Wong's chips for a more aggressive, but still safe, tune.

Pretty sure the 993 has a dynamic timing system that is referred to as knock control. As long as that system is efficient, I call BS on chips for this car unless your running gas from NASA.

So you're qualified/certified, e.g. by Porsche/Bosch, to technically recommend one "tuner" over another, right?

Please tell us who you are and your background, e.g. you work for Porsche Motor Sport. Thanks "-nick".

Did you get this was just his opinion?

If everyone had to get qualified by Porsche/Bosch/Fister/Tore to recommend a product.... there would be no Rennlist!

If he has the equipment to look at the mapping of OP's chip, it would seem to me its more than a consumer review.

Further, I think Loren is just trying to help people to not waist their money.

I can't easily pull up the figures on knock control, but there is nothing left on the table as far as ignition timing on these cars.
