Top End Rebuild on 95 993 in Minnesota
Hey folks, I just recently got a quote for $7800 to do the top end on my 993. I've been out of the loop for a while, is this fair? I was thinking it was going to be closer to $6k. Anyone have any twin cities shops they recommend I try?
Thanks!
Steve

What are they including in that estimate? The price can change a lot depending on the work being done.

They are under $30, but there are at least a couple of places that have them for under $35 including azautohaus, importec, and fcpeuro

Depends on whether you opt for OEM or after market lifters. Sunset has OEM lifters for $90 a piece, which is over $1000 just for the parts. Pelican has aftermarket lifters for $31 each. I paid $25 each for mine from EBS Racing a little over a year ago.
If you are defining a "top end" as only a valve job, then you're looking at $3 to $4000 for parts and third party machine work. R&R of the power train plus disassembly of the "top end" can easily be 30 to 40 man-hours of labor. At $100 per hour, you're looking at $3000 to $4000 in labor. But, many shops are now charging well over $100 per hour.
If your "top end" also extends to include rod work, bearings, and rings, then the cost can easily exceed $10,000. If you end up with P&C's, figure on an additional $5000 for the P&C kit.
Ours are NOT cheap toys to fix!

Lifters are Ina, whether in Porsche boxes or not, as far as I know.
I hope your mechanic gets the rockers back in the right spots, if they just flop them on the bench like that.

Ina is notorious for bad lifters. At least the ones in the Porsche boxes haven't been re-spec'd and meet porsche's stringent quality control measures. I only use Porsche belts on my car. I'm certainly not going to screw around with what I put in the engine.
In today's Rothsport thread you just stated that "For a proven part $299 isn't an exorbitant amount to spend on these cars." https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...thsport-2.html Take some of your own medicine.
And knocking my mechanic for flopping - what's next Mr. Ed?

Like I said, hope he gets the rockers back in the right place.

Gandalf, As it was said by 993mpls, Courtney Truck - Give them a call. They specialize in Air-cooled Porsches, even though the name doesn't reflect it. I have had brakes and oil changes done there and the prices are always reasonable. If you're top-end involves a complete head machining, valve guides, lifters, rockers and maybe even a few valves, you're definitely up in the range you're talking about tho... Which 993 do you have?
