997gt3 gearbox in 993
Hi
does any one know if I can use the 993 tip trans cooler to cool the 997 gt3 gearbox as these boxes are cooled by the engine water cooling system?
Regards
Josh

That would work. You would still need a pump as well as some way of turning it on and off automatically (thermo switch mounted in the transmission). Lines of course. The Tip cooler itself has some non standard fittings on it, I would cut them off the cooler and have someone TIG some dash fittings onto them instead.
I have a Tip cooler ready to go in my car for transmission cooling, once I get the transmission drilled for inlet/outlet as well as temp sensor.

There is any pump on the GT3 Transmission, the oil flows by the natural turbulence within the transmission. Someone else may have a better explanation...

There is also an internal spray bar
he early 993 Gt3 trans are a little bigger than the 993 trans but can be fitted w/ some effort, I don't remember the details though, They also changed from rod to cable shift after the first couple of years so the shifter would also need to be changed

the first issue is the esternal dimensions, these are bigger than the 993 g50's
the second issue is the shifter
the third issue will be the heat exchange mechanism, the trans has an internal mechanical pump, spray bar and pickup. The inner loop just circulates fluid from the trans through the oil/water exchanger and the back to the trans, there is also a thermostat integral to the unit that bypasses the heat exchanger, it just returns the fluid to the trans. W/o the late water cooling circuit you would want to circulate through an oil/air exchange like the older cars used. Unless you remove the pump you must leave a fluid circuit in place
