Question Vibration on wheel after pot hole

Hi Guys,

What do you guys think I damaged. In NY I hit a pot hole hard, with the right tire. There is a vibration now on speeds of 55-65 mph.

Could it be rim related, or tire related or ball joint, or tie rod or shocks etc.
The car still goes straight, the alignment is good.
Seems shacky at 55pmh.

Any guesses appreciated.

I'd take it too a good alignment/tire shop. You may have lost a wheel weight.

I'd agree with Phil on this one....hope it's just a weight which will only cost you a few $$s to rebalance and not a bent rim.

Kadeer, if it's not the alignment or rim weight, you might have admaged your wheel. Check out Wheel Collision Center in Bath, PA (no affiliation) for a refurb. I had a very good experience there.

Phil/David, I will get the rims balanced today at a local auto shop, if it does not balance then I will do as Frank suggested.
Thanks

I advise using only a shop which has a Hunter 9700

I have found it is the only way I can get 18" wheels balanced. Probably optimal for other sizes, too.

It may be a lost wheel weight, but I'll bet that your wheel is bent. I had the same symptoms after hitting a pothole - my left rear wheel had a nice indent along the inside edge that threw it out of balance. New wheel required.

kadeer,

I've got the same problem, it happens with both my track wheels and street wheels. I think someone over cranked the lugs at track and damaged something behind the rotors. It's not very noticable on my car so I decided to leave it for the time being. The car drives very straight under accleration and braking so I know it's not the alignment.

Also, whenever I've thrown a weight, i've never had vibration in the wheel over 55. Not saying it doesn't happen. But when I throw a weight more often than not I get a clunking sound that reminds me of a bad C / V joint.

Bent rim - happened to me as well (17" no less). Vibrations over 50mph is a tell-tale sign (mine vibrated over 80mph).

Proper shop can "fix" your wheel. Good luck.

I went and got the front wheels balanced. The shop mech did not see any dents from the outside. Both wheels needed balancing.
But the problem still exists even after balanced, over 55mph +.

Is it possible to get a bent rim balanced? I figured it would not balance if it was damaged.
Or the bent is not visible from the outside of the tire/rim inspection.
Or is it something else I could have damaged in the car.

Thanks

A bent wheel can be balanced. However, a good tech would see the bend as it is rotating on the balancing machine.

If the wheel is dented/bent, it should not be able to be balanced; should be quite visible when spun I would think.

Did you get the wheels balanced on or off the car? Might be something with the hub. Also, I think the rotors have some weights in their ends at various spots; one of these might have been thrown. Might need a good looksee by a good Porsche shop.

Did you check the rears also?

I guess you could get the wheels somewhat balanced if they are bent. If in doubt, have someone check the rims and whether they are bent. You might not see that with the naked eye and should talk to a specialist about that (not just a tire shop). Just my $0.02.

I got the wheels balanced off the car. Just the fronts
Rears, I believe did not hit the pot hole, so did not check. Plus vibration is strong on the steering.

The FR wheel did not look damaged as i saw them too.
Is is possbile the tire could be damaged by the force.

I will try to switch to an extra set of wheels with slicks, to confirm rim or rotor etc.

You can balance a bent rim if it is not severe.
Outside chance but, did you check the wheel bearings? Do you get a groaning noise from the front of the car during hard cornering?

I had a problem with tires that caused a high speed vibration. They balanced fine also. Might replace the tires or swap wheels and tires with a fellow 993 owner and see if that helps.
