The overlap in 993 and 996 production is completely normal for Porsche. When the "next generation" model is introduced, it generally replaces that model only. So when the 996 was launched in the fall of 1997 as a Carrera 2 coupe, the 993 continued on in wide body coupe (C2S, C4S, Turbo, GT2), Targa, and cabriolet models (C2 and C4). Production for those models ended in December of 1997 for North American spec cars (with the exception of Turbos which were not available for the 1998 model year and the GT2 which was always ROW only) and March 1998 for ROW cars.

This model overlap has continued to this day.

I don't understand why we don't call the early production 996's hand built? Did Dieter and Adolpho become animatronic later in their lives?

Any idea on C2S's and C4S production worldwide in 1998? The reason I ask is there are implications here locally of cheaper licensing if models are really low volume, typically less than 1500 produced worldwide of a particular model.

I looked into the "Collector Status" when I had my twin turbo and was turned down, also the car had to be original without any mods. Which leaves most porsches with the suspension upgrades or exhaust mods out of the loop. They also want to see the original radios in them.

I ordered what was going to be one of the last of the air-cooled cabs in late winter of '97. Dealer said we were lucky to get it. Then suddenly a month or three later, there were '98 993 wide-bodies announced -- S-es and Cabs and some Turbos. Seems the factory had extra bodies leftover, and production problems on the water-pumpers delayed launch. Voila '98 993s.

Somewhere in the deep dark recesses of the RL computer banks there is verification. Only Adrian Streather knows for sure.

(Had that '97 cab Garage Queen out a couple of times over the last few days in glorious Rocky Mountain autumn weather. Now I remember...)

http://www.icbc.com/vehicle-registration/collector-mods/Documents/collector-status.pdf

In BC Canada it can be under 1500 produced for that model year and it can be lowered up to 1" (2.5cm)

I looked into it for my C4S but more than 1500 were produced in 97 by my research. For collector status I will need to wait until it is 25 yrs old.

Does anybody know production figures on the '96 C4S? Usually ones I see are 97. Wonder if my car qualifies (I know you are referencing BC, but maybe one day I'll move back to Vancouver with the 993 in tow!).

Yah, you can change the suspension, etc. I also looked at this for my 97' turbo, and ended up with :
  • 1997 993TT made worldwide - 1468
  • 1997 993TT made worldwide with the X50 option - 370
  • 1997 993TT S's worldwide made - 182

Since ICBC would group the X50 builds in with the standard product, my world-wide production count would be 1838, which is above 1500, so my car does not qualify. I was going to argue that the X50 package is a different model, but I would really be out on a limb there.

I have never seen world wide production numbers for any 98's 993C2S's for instance - one of the guys up here was trying to get collector status for his 98 C2S but could not confirm the numbers from a reliable source.

Cheers,

Mike

Yah, seen that, but we need world-wide production numbers, not US importation ...

Too funny. But, that can't be correct.

$80K for a 50k car is a great deal. That's what these cars sold for a long time ago.... like in April
