Default You all obviously have good taste in cars, so...

Looking for your ideas on a good, fun, daily driver SUV. I'd like something under $20k and high miles is just fine if properly maintained. I'm thinking older Range Rover (I know, I know I'm read up on past reliability), 4Dr Wrangler, Cherokee, Explorer, 4Runner, Tahoe, Yukon, etc...

Just curious what your thoughts are and what you'll come up with that I haven't thought of. Or, is someone in need of some 993 mod funds?:thumb up:

Thoughts???

I generally like many of the engines found in the BMWs, and they tend to handle less "SUV-like" than much of the competition. Can't comment on their reliability. Bear in mind I haven't driven any of the Porsche SUVs, although they will likely exceed your budget anyhow.

How practical do you need your SUV to be (is seating and cargo space important)? If all you need is ground clearance, I suppose there are tons of options, but if you have other requirements, then finding that fun factor may be a more elusive task.

Your only real option is a 4Runner.

GREAT little trucks. We're on our 4th.

Good to know. I've heard great things about them and they seem to hold up to Toyotas long running strength.

Not sure what I want yet...that's why I'm leaning on the good idea club to offer ideas that I may not have thought of...different approach, huh?

Another vote for a Toyota 4Runner.

A friend has a BMW X5 - best recommendation I have ever heard was "Don't keep it past warranty" - his SUV has nothing but problems, all starting as soon as off warranty. Constant computer issues and the stealer charges $120/ hr to diagnose...

Have you driven an older Range Rover? I happened to like most things about them. When they are stationary. When you drive one it's a wobbly, wollowy barge mostly designed for honest off-roading and used on asphalt by mostly unsuspected duped masses. With some notable exceptions, but as a rule...

I've recently driven a friend's newer X5 with all the sport packages and other doo-dads one can get. Completely underwhelming feeling of dragging around tons of extra unneeded metal for no explainable reason. At least, unlike RR, that thing and "handling" can be loosely used in the same sentence. The aforementioned friend got his sill of it in less than a year and is looking to get rid of it.

Yup. Love the Avant, only wish it had the AllRoad ground clearance. A Subaru is another thing for you to look at. Heck I'll take another look at them when I'm done with the Audi...awesome driving vehicle, luxury, but costly I think as I roll out of warranty

i bought a Toyota FJ cruiser and modified it to my liking and before i bought the 993 i sold it. bought it new in 2011 for 29k then sold it 3.5years and 40k miles later for 25k. They def hold their value i would say the same for a 4rnr too
