Its most likely the evaporator. I upgraded to the Griffith. Be prepared to be taxed around 2K

True, however have the system diagnosed before jumping to conclusions, it could be something else.

Speaking of A/C issues, mine works fine but the compressor makes a really weird noise while running. It's hard to describe the noise, do most other 993s have a similar sound or should it more or less be quiet?

Mine is quiet most of the time. However, after long continued use (about 4-5 hours), it makes an odd sound when the clutch kicks in and the compressor is working. I'm thinking the compressor is going and at some point, I'll have to replace it.

Mine stopped blowing cold last year and it was simply a faulty O ring seal in one of the lines. I recommend checking all lines first before jumping to any bigger issues.

My compressor doesn't seem to make any noise when running. However, when the compressor clutch kicks in, there is quite a loud click. I think the click is normal behavior, but haven't done an A/B comparison with another car.

I to have the loud click when the compressor starts spinning. I assumed it was normal operation also.

A click is normal - it's the magnetic clutch engaging.

How does one check the o rings, recharge and look for signs of leaks or is disassembly with visual inspection recommended? Anyone tried the auto store recharge bottles or is that something to stay away from?

they checked mine but injecting a dye, then (i think) checked it with a UV light to see where the dye was leaking from.

Stay away from any of the recharge bottle that contain any kind of "leak-stop".

If you remove the cabin air filters, you can get a pretty good look at the evaporator with a flashlight and inspection mirror. If you see dirt adhered to the evaporator, that is an indication of leakage--the dirt sticks where the AC oil has leaked out.
