Diagnose Shift Linkage Issue

So I am having some issues with my shifting. Weltmeister short shifter with Golden Rod. Left to right spring is not working when I push the shifter to the right. It won't spring back on its own.

Hmmmm....bottom of shifter rubbing on the cover plate? No grease on the clamshell that goes around the torque tube (or whatever exists there on an 2wd)?

Did it suddenly get like that, or slowly get like that?

Not rubbing. This video was with the tunnel cover off. Never shifted great but seems slower these days.

The springs that return the shifter to its normal position are located within the transaxle. And pretty deep in there at that.

Hoping for an easier fix...fingers crossed.

Did you just install the short shift? If so did you remember go change the idler tube yo the upper position?

Yes this was all done a few years ago. I have just been dealing with it for a while but finally want to fix the problem.

Do you feel a lot of resistance when you move the stick to the right or is it pretty smooth and effortless?

Cactus 06-16-2014 09:01 AM

It is the same left and right. It is kind of tight but I chalked that up to the short shift kit.

Is there a way to test the side to side with the linkage apart? That way I can see if it is the linkage or internal problems.

hey dood...

disconnect the shift rod from the shift fork.
The shift lever should then move around freely.
If it doesn't, the problem is in the shift box area.

Also, with shift rod disconnected, try to rotate the shift rod when in neutral.
It should spring back to center.
If it doesn't... then it's the trans :(

Sage advice.

Cactus, I hope you don't need to get a close ratio gearbox to fix this...:icon501:

Looks like the both heim joints on the front shift rod froze. This is very good news. Lubing my joint (s) as we speak:evilgrin:
