Default Oil filter removal

Hello All!

Looking at a oil leak from the vicinity of the small oil filter. 3,000 miles on the oil, was going to wait till the next change to investigate.

Might be getting worse, so...
Have you removed the small oil filter, without draining the oil? Looking at the oil hoses, I may not be able to without a flood. I don't think the old filter gasket remained, I always clean that area before the new filter. My goal is to investigate the area with the oil filter off, including the oil gasket on the filter.

Thanks for input on this...

I think you can pull that filter without draining the oil tank. It makes a mess either way...

pull it, it doesn't spill anymore than it normally would when doing an oil change.

Slip your filter cup socket & a long 3/8 extension in there first to check that the filter is snug ...

Yep, tried that!
I have the old "End Cap Socket" from my 944. Makes that task easy. Seemed pretty snug. Did a cleanup in the area, 3 days later already a few oil trails. Not sure what else could leak in that area besides the oil filter gasket. The oil pipe connection there seems tight.

Just to wrap up this thread, and provide future info:

Small oil filter can be removed without draining the oil. You only lose the oil in the filter, and make a big mess. - Confirmed

I checked the gasket, cleaned the area, and noticed something strange. The oil seemed to be coming from above the filter housing. I went into the engine compartment, and took a look into the back area, by the firewall. Made easier on my car, no varioram, and I have done the sai delete.
Holy Crap! Look at all the oil! Seemed to be spraying from the oil sending unit, which I had replaced 1 month prior. Tightened it down, thought the problem was fixed. Next day, more oil around the sending unit!

I removed it, put the old one back in. Inspecting the "new" unit, purchased from Porsche, the relief hole on top near the wiring connectors, showed signs of oil coming out!

All good now!

Thanks for the follow-up. You can reach the oil pressure sender? What needs to be removed: airbox... and...?

I removed the right intake runners and in the air box. If you still have the SAI pump and tubing, I think that may not be enough for you. Possibly throttle body also.
