On the topic of rebuilding, I was reading some threads from 2-3yrs ago about the OEM Brembo piston and seal kits. Most said the 16 kits came to about $300. Looking at pricing now, it's nearly double.

Any leads on affordable OEM kits?

I think the 16 Brembo kits from Sunset were somewhere around $300 when I rebuilt my calipers four years ago. I initially purchased the wiper seal & dust seal kits from Zeckhausen but returned them since the dust seals seemed very, very flimsy.

In the end, the complete & proper Brembo kits (pistons/wiper seals/dust seals/lube) were only $100 more than the aftermarket seals...

Yes - I've been reading your threads for guidance I just priced the kits out at Sunset and Suncoast, and both are just shy of $600 now!

Not cheaper, but they have an option without pistons which is significantly cheaper:

$56 for boots and seals per caliper vs $316 for pistons, boots and seals for 2 calipers...yes, significant difference

How often are new pistons actually necessary? Aside from visible corrosion, what are the signs/symptoms that pistons should be replaced?

I'm planning to replace just the dust boots, some of which are torn and leave it alone.

Good find! Now we're getting somewhere I also see that Paragon sells some sizes of individual pistons for $5-8ea.

But as Chris V mentioned, I'm curious to know how to diagnose a need for piston replacement?

The original Brembo pistons are anodized aluminum. All 16 of mine looked utterly perfect. Since I purchased the complete rebuild kits, I installed the new pistons and sold my originals.

If the pistons show corrosion or scoring, they're obviously in need of replacement. But that would possibly point to other issues...
