DIY for mirror removal?

All you need is an Allen wrench(don't recall the size). The screw head faces up where the mirror meets the car. Unscrew it, that's all there is to it.
Be careful when putting the mirror back on. The nut thing that the screw goes into can crack and break and you have no way of securing the mirror to the car until the new part gets shipped to you. Don't tighten too tight.

remove the small plastic plug on the inboard side of the mirror.
loosen the allen screw while wiggling the mirror.
continue wiggling the mirror while loosening until mirror comes off
no need to remove screw completely
as stated above, tighten screw carefully during re-intall.
too much TQ = broken internal fastener.

It's still unclear for me where to disconnect the wires for the mirrors? Is the connector inside the door or inside the mirror? Seen quite many photos where the wires have been cut right at the mirror base and I don't think that is the right solution.

Some of the photos could be from 944s when fitting 968 Aero mirrors (same mirror as 993 different base). That connector is inside the mirror so to take the base off you have to remove the plug. On a 993 it's inside the door. Be careful when removing it will release all at once and drop hitting the door if not supported or floor when you pull the plug. Similar idea when fitting 993 mirrors to 964. Cutting the wires is not necessary as the plug can be dismantled and the wires fed through the base on 944, presume 964 is the same. When 993 was created they fixed that daft idea.
