If you had the choice between a 2014 GT3 or a 993 (last of the air-cooled).....
I would go with the 2014 GT3 even if it has water running through its veins because it is a far better vehicle.

Porsche has recalled the 2014 GT3. Has nothing to do with affordability. It might have something to do with a high pressure oil pump next to the catalytic converter.

The rise in price of the 993's, the 964's and the 911 3.2's is completely insane. I'm hoping to buy my 1st p-car in about 2 months time, and it seems that the "only" one that I would be able to afford is an early 997.1 C2S. Not a bad choice AT ALL, but what I really want is a 993.
I'm planning to spend low 40's, but it seems that I won't be able to get the type of 993 I'm looking for (manual, coupe, documented, ~60k miles) for that amount of money. I've been browsing for more than a year, and I saw more than a few of those for that amount of money (sometimes less) pop up every once in a while. I've also noticed that the supply has decreased dramatically. Hey, if I had a 993 right now, I wouldn't be selling either!
On a side note, I can't imagine the price people would be willing to pay for that last 993 from Seinfeld...

For me, no question a 993 GT2.
But as to your original question: I would own the 993. Indeed, I faced that decision at one point, do I buy a GT3 when my number came up at my dealer. I came to the conclusion I didn't want to part with my 993. This was ten years or so ago and time has more than convinced me that I made the correct decision (for me).

Other than my house and my 1969 Fender Mustang Competition guitar, my 993 and GT3RS are the only two things I've ever bought that are currently worth more than I paid for them.
I love getting looks from the hens in the neighborhood when I drive by the bus stop most mornings in one of my Porsches. They probably talk amonst themselves about how I appear to waste money. Then they get back in their one year old rapidly depreciating minivan and think about how smart they are compared to me

If we're going down Neighbor Envy Lane--rollin' the "Ruf" 996 Turbo around everywhere for the past 6 weeks, it's funny how much attention the car gets v. the 993 4S, Aerokit or not. I know I'm the outlier when I can drop the ~35 year 911 owner + the repair side of things, but those people are quickly talked off the ledge when they understand the car cost me basically what that new minivan runs. People are suckers for stories about "expensive" cars that are DIY fixers.

They are continuing to go up, but if you're aggressively patient (i.e., patient, but ready to jump hard and fast at the right car), you should still be able to find one in the mid-high 30s to low 40s through at least the next 6-8 months, and who knows after that?
GL!
Now, if only prices on semi worn but mechanically tip top 3.2 cabs would go up, so I could pay for the 993...

Don't be so sure...I managed to obtain one fitting that bill in the past couple of weeks for a bit under low 40s, including transport cost. Mine went over 60k, literally, on the drive home.
