993 Weighted Shift Knob Confusion
 

Hi ---

May I ask a question about shift knobs? I'm a bit baffled myself. I have a 1996 C2 with a stock black-insert shift knob, and I bought an OE shift knob with an aluminum insert from a fellow rennlister.

When I received the shift knob I noted that it is weighted heavier than my C2 shift knob ---- doing some searches revealed to me that the new shift knob is prob from a C4 or C4S.

Okay …. but I cannot figure out how the heck I am supposed to attach this shift knob to my shift lever! The opening to slot onto the shift-shaft seems WAAAAAAY larger that my original one. Any clues guys?

Am I missing a black rubber insert to "neck down" the new shift knob to my car? or is the new shift knob supposed to come with some kind of clip? Or both?

there should be i believe two rubber inserts in the AWD shift knob to neck it down. The metal snap ring is presumably there to keep them in place.

once you get them, put a tiny bit of dish soap onto either the shaft or the rubber (boy that sounded dirty) to ease install.

I have just the rubber inserts but no clip on mine. It works fine.

Hi -- update -- -spoke with Andraya at Sunset. She said she's not really sure if the "wide mouth" knob (ostensibly from a C4 or C4s) can fit a C2's "shift shaft" where the C2 "narrow mouth" knob should go [yes i know it sounds so dirty this is not intentional] because the parts catalog shows that a C4 has a different "shifting shaft" than a C2.

That said, I am using FD Motorsports' "shift shaft" anyways and FD doesn't make a distinction between C2 and C4 .... I just ordered parts 34, 35, and 36 on this diagram and hope it fits!

When I installed the C4 weighted knob in my C2, the rubber bushings did not take up enough slack to my liking. So I drilled and tapped the forward portion of the metal housing (after peeling the leather back) and installed a short hex head cap screw. It works great.

Not sure about the FDM lever size.

Do you have the SSK? My SSK was done at FD, and the weighted shift knob fits just fine on the shaft.

Yes, I also have the FDM Goldenrod & SSK. Great then! I'll report back how well the rubber bushings and steel clips works with the weighted shift knob on my C2.

Actually I'm very intrigued to see what the additional weight of the shift knob will do. It is A LOT heavier than the C2 shift knob. With the standard C2 shift knob weight and FDM SSK/GR as well as fresh Redline 75W90NS fluid in the transmission, shifting is already sublime. Can it get any better?

I had purchased the weighted knob purely for looks --- I like the aluminum gear-pattern insert and my current C2 knob is worn .... additional weight is an unexpected bonus...

You'll love the additional weight of this shifter. It definitely makes the shifting easier and smoother with less effort with each throw.

C2 and C4 knobs are completely interchangeable with those rubber dampers and the "C" clip

Dumb question --- thanks for entertaining this ---- I just received parts 34 and 35. From the diagram it looks like I need to squeeeeeeeze and compress 34 to fit INSIDE 35. (diagram above) ---- can someone confirm this is the case?

No, 34 goes in the end, 35 goes halfway up

No. The one that necks down goes into the shift knob first, and the second rectangular one goes next. they shouldn't go inside one another.

Hi Folks ---- I installed the knob and it fits and shifts beautifully. It took me oh, only 1 hour longer that it should have taken me to install (should have taken me 5 minutes) because I kept on jamming pieces 34 and 35 into the very end of the shift knob … with resultant "wobbly" results while shifting …. until I figured out, as 911pervy stated, that 34 goes on the end of the shaft and 35 only goes half way up.

Anyways, this makes shifting lovely, and I ended up not using the clip. I don't like the way that the rounded end of the clip places "pressure" from the inside out against the shift boot at times….

Sunset is correct in a way I think. The c2 knob is difficult to fit on a c4. Porsche no longer makes the aluminium look knob for c4 so when I got the c2 version I had a hell of a time making it fit snug.

Bringing this thread back. Thinking about adapting this weighted C4 knob/boot ($355 from Suncoast) to my C2. Would prefer the tecequipment alum knob if this ever gets produced, but at $500+ a bit too pricey. If anyone has either of these & are willing to part with....shoot me a PM.

I'm currently having this same shift knob (from my C4S) re-trimmed (stock, black leather) at Carsdream.

It will be for sale when I get it back, for less than a brand new knob (which I recently purchased and installed).
