Engine Undertray
At the risk of bringing up a volatile subject... A couple years ago, we had a big debate on the pros and cons of the engine undertray. It was about this time of year, but there was a guy from Canada that was going to do some cylinder head temperature tests with, and without the undertray. Did that ever happen? Any new thoughts on whether to remove it or not?

Do not think we saw any results posted - did you search?
I run my 993's without them, and with the Turbo, I think its even more important given the amount of heat those turbos can generate. However, our weather is quite mild here in Vancouver so being too cold is not an issue. I also have disposed of several other covers for people coming in for work.
I keep the transmission cover on though.
Cheers,
Mike

Because the heat travels up and most of the cooling is done by the oil, my common sense would tell me that taking cover off makes no difference from cooling perspective.
Since we are theorizing here...What about the lift? Wouldn't removing tray create lift and turbulence at the rear?

Yeah, but doesn't the fan push that air 'down' past the heads? Or does it blow the other way???

I was wondering where they all end up... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-993-...903123&vxp=mtr (no affiliation)
If they are so great why does he have 11 of them?

I don't know if running without and engine tray has any advantages, but running without an engine tray does come with some risks, FYI.
Several people have had damage to their heater flapper boxes, which, if your car is lowered and without an engine tray, can catch on driveways and such and result in damage to the boxes and other exposed engine parts.

Porsche designed these cars with the trays so why remove them? If a 993 is experiencing high temps then there's an air or oil cooling issue. Mine has the tray as intended by Porsche and runs perfectly.

I'm guessing that noise regulation was 1 of the reasons the 964/993 had one from the factory. Aircooled engines are noisy and the EU got tuff with that in the 90s.
