Default Hole in duct

All,

I recently experienced rough idle and at times engine dies as it drops from high rpms coming to a stop. The CEL light has not come on. I went to go check what type of belts were installed and found the alternator belt is PORSCHE and the A/C belt to be CONTINENTAL. To my surprise, I saw this hole (circled) as shown here. My questions are

1.) What's this duct called and what's it purpose
2.) What would cause such a hole
3.) How will it affect motor performance/function
4.) How easy/hard to replace or fix/patch

Thanks in advance for your input.

Best Regards,

sjsfiji

it's the fan shroud, not expensive.

From previous posts here, I can provide the following guesses:
  1. Fan shroud. It contains cooling air and directs it over the cylinder heads.
  2. Previous posts indicate that the part is made of a rubberized plastic. Given that the "youngest" 993 is now almost 15 years old, this failure is a result of the shroud becoming brittle with age and basically shattering.
  3. It may result in the engine running a little warmer, but not the symptoms you described in your original post.
  4. Previous posts indicate that effecting a repair is fairly simple. You can purchase the part at any Porsche dealer.

The fact that one of your belts is not a Porsche belt may contribute to the problem you described with engine idle, but you may also want to search on "ISV" (Idle stabilization valve) if the belts aren't the problem.

Thanks for the replies. I'll replace/fix that shroud as it may cause higher engine temps. As for the ISV, I'll pull it out and clean it with carb cleaner as I do with my old mercs. The last time I cleaned it, the problem was resolved. Again, thank you for the help. I just love this car and this forum.

OP,
Check the part number on your fan shroud. There is a 964.***.***.** and a 993.***.***.** part number. Generally early cars use the 964, later use 993....only way to tell is to check the current one.

Keith is bang on here. As the OP's car is a Varioram! it should be the later 993 part number. IIRC, the variance comes in MY 1995 cars and their elongated production run (993s began production in September 1993 for ROW cars and January 1994 for US and Canadian cars).

if we could somehow combine these fan duct post's with a valuation / thinking of selling post...that would be full of win.
example;

Thinking of selling my slightly used fan duct, how much is it worth?

and...
if I repair/replace my fan duct, does it mean I have to put the engine tray back on?

Well, the same can be said of front bushings, brake spyders, clutch slave cylinders, the clutch plate binding on the input shaft, idle stabilization valve issues, do I buy a Fister I, II, or III, what does LPMM mean, what a particular user plans to do to their car this winter, what a particular user didn't get done last winter, engine out parties, my wiper blade doesn't sit flat on my windshield, replacing the felt on the sunroof, resealing the rear window gasket, replacing/lubricating the belt sensor, why does my battery go flat? and many, many more...Hell, let's just close all of the threads and let people come here and use "Search." Or even better, just don't open a thread if you don't like the topic.

EDIT: Oh, and for god's sake don't forget what oil is best?

+1 lol...

It would, however, be nice if the forum could be organized by sections - interior, brakes, engine... It would make searching much easier and eliminate redundant posts.

LOL
it boggles my mind how little new owners know about their car's design / functionality.....
but I was also there 6 years ago.

good think Keith and others are available to help.

This was discussed on the forum? What was the verdict?

Actually, the up facing air intake is a pretty good clue on it being the 993 version. The early '95's with the 964 part look totally different. Variorum would have no effect, but it would certainly be a 993 part for sure.

Funny, I knew where this was going before I even opened the thread. When it was confirmed, I first thought "this is the monthly inquiry".
