"The Reno Air Races is THE destination for anyone liking round engines and lots of HP. A true bucket list event.[/QUOTE]
100% agree about Reno, Steve.
Reminds me of Steve Hinton.
Too many years ago a friend and I went to Planes of Fame in Chino, looking for
P-51 rides.
Hinton says "Art (Vance) and I are taking the B-25 out, we have room for you two mutts if interested".

Talking about vintage military reminds me of my encounter about 3 yrs. ago with one of my heros. It was written up in PANO awhile back. I had the distinct pleasure of instructing and subsequently signing off to solo then 89 yr. young Dick Gimmi. Dick was driving his Cayman S and, altho I had initial trepidations, we had a great time during our first session. He was taking instructions well and keeping his speed up with the rest of the students, much his junior. As the day wore on, I learned more about my student. He was a retired colonel in the Air Force...correction...Air Corps! In WWII, he had flown 35 missions in B25's over Europe, F84's and F86's in Korea and F104's in Nam! He was type-rated in too many to list here and an instructor in most. His son wrote an excellent biography about his father, entitled AIRMAN and it's well worth reading. Dick is 92 now and, after someone t-boned his new Carrera PDK, he decided to go to the "dark side" and purchased a new BMW 335i. BTW, Dick solo'ed at Carolina Motorsport Park in Kershaw, SC...it's built on the site of an old WWII Army airfield ...the very same airfield that Dick first solo'ed in 1942! Talk about "The Greatest Generation"!

That's quite the airstrip, where the crash occurred. Here's a video I found:
Together with the shortish runway, the 4,000' field elevation would give some interesting density altitude situations in the summer time. No wonder it's called "America's Lukla".

What about v-12's? 4 of 'em - RR merlins on a Lancaster;

Well, I guess if I opened the bi-fold door and the P51D Merlin was staring me in the face I could get excited about it.....
There is just no sound in the world like a Mustang's Merlin (Packard) flying low at full throttle. Every pilot on the planet would say the same thing.
