Default What is this and is it a DIY?

Saw this tonight when i got home when i was checking my oil. Not sure when it ripped but havent noticed any effect on the performance. Seems to surround the fan housing but thats where my guessing ends

Is this part easily repairable? Any ideas on costs if its not a moderate diy? I can undertake relatively minor stuff but if it is too involved it will have to go to my indy

Any harm in driving it in the meantime?

Any thoughts appreciated

vern good sir, this has been discussed nearly one billion times.

a simple search will reveal all.

the short:

simple to replace, 3 10mm bolts, part costs about $45

An engine rebuild is a DIY project. This is much simpler.

DIY?
only if you can;
  • order the part
  • receive the part
  • remove the defective part,
  • 8mm socket
  • 2" extension
  • ratchet
  • Install the new part
  • align the components
  • drink beer afterwards

  • I suspect it is well within your capabilities

    have fun and good luck

Seriously, I thought someone had vandalized my car when I saw that on mine. I looked up the part using the Porsche parts manual - you should get the one for your car:

    https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-for-free.html

Then I did a search here on the part name and discovered it's a common failure but not expensive or time consuming.

I taped mine up with electrical tape for fear or impacting cooling airflow until the new part arrived.

Anyone know why they blow out? Is it sudden shut off of air flow or sudden increase?
