993 vs New Cayman S
My son and I visited the new Porsche dealership in town last week for the PCA meeting and waiting for us as we got out of the car was a 993 parked behind the new Cayman S. Wow, is the new Cayman a nice car!!! As I did a little research on them this afternoon, I came across this article comparing the two and thought that some of you might be interested in reading it.

The new Cayman is a very nice car and in the S version definitely has a higher performance envelope but this is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. While I appreciate the vastly improved styling of the Cayman I prefer my 993.

This is too easy for me...but there is no doubt that the new Porsches are better greater and faster....but there are few cars in the world that possess the soul of 993 while still offering useability, beauty, and genuine ownership pride. Newer Porsches are not even in the same universe as a 993.
Caymans and new 911s are great...but the reasons I love my 993 are....well, I think you all already know for yourselves!

The Ocean blue 993 is one of our local RLer here, it's a beautiful C2S! His RL intro included this article.
You said it Onami, great summer DD or DD all year around for some of us! I had a chance to take a new Cayman out last month, it's impressive for a new car. But any new car in this generation, like others have stated it lacks character or at least the old school charm we all appreciate. And even this being the smaller pcar available feels big in size compared to the 993.
I will say this though, after reading all about the electric steering negatives I had already pre-set myself it was going to be terrible for steering feedback + weight on the wheel. Turns out it's actually not that bad at all, having a 987 before, honestly the difference wasn't even noticeable to me.

I'd love a new Cayman. Great looking car with all the latest gizmos and features you'd want in a new car. But I'd want one alongside an older 911 (993, 964, 3.2), not as my only Porsche.

My brother had a boxter s and it was pretty fun. I like the 993 much better. I see no reason why I can't drive it forever if I just keep fixing it. It will keep appreciating as long as it stays in good working order.
My friend and I did a comparison between buying a 993 and a new M3 today, maintaining it for 5 years, then selling. (Similar to the boxter pricewise). The result is that the M3 was around $900/month and the 993 was just over $300. Depreciation is a killer.

My car purchase decision came down to EXACTLY these two vehicles.
If you haven't driven a 981 Cayman S, do yourself a favor and drive it. It's a fantastic car. The 981 is substantially different from the earlier Cayman or Boxsters.
I bought the 993, but I will own a 981 CS in the future. I have no doubts about that.

I was at the PCA meeting in Oakville and got to test drive the new Cayman. Wow!! what a great well balanced car, I loved everything about it.
But right after I drove the Cayman I jumped into my 993 and drove back home. Both cars are great but the 993 has a special feeling you just can't replicate in a new Cayman or 991. After the back to back comparison, I don't know if I could ever get rid of the 993(unless for another air cooled 911). I would love to add a modern day Porsche to the stable one day but for me if I can only have 1 Porsche its got to be a air cooled one.

But, as some critics have asked rhetorically: "Is the new Cayman TOO perfect?" Not a silly question. I'm like all of you on this board. I find the 993's foibles endearing, adding to the character of the car and ultimately the driving experience.
Which car would I drive the next time I am heading out on a 500 mile road trip? Cayman, every time. Which car would I drive to the next PCA Social? 993, every time. I am just thankful that I have the means to own both.

Many new Cayman buyers (those who can't afford two P-cars) will have interesting choice to make.
The base model (2.7) invoice price is about what current C2S prices are these days (around $50K).
When they consider new car depreciation... they better not read comparisons like this.
