Another Steve Weiner happy customer
Hello,
I usually don't start threads but felt compelled to share my experience.
I have an early 993 with about 85k miles and to my knowledge the distributor belt had not been replaced. I thought of having done locally with the FD Motorsports team but they sent me to Steve as they don't offer that service.
Step 1 was to remove the distributor and that was a nightmare in itself, I still have the bruises on my forearms to prove it. Every instruction you read is that you just have to pull hard and it just comes out. I was pulling so hard that the car was shaking more than with 2 horny teenagers on the back seat having at it. Finally I borrowed a lady's crow foot from a neighboor mechanic and that was the ticket. But I swear I thought I was going to break it in half as I had to put so much force into it.
I got the rebuilt distributor back a couple days ago and Steve confirmed the belt was starting to fray on the outside so I caught it just in time. My engine was still set to TDC from the time I took it out, I set the distributor and installed it back in. Car fires right away, all is good, it is a late night so I am going to bed really happy on a job well done. Take the car to work the next morning I made it 2 blocks with the engine misfiring, stalling, very hard to pull from a stop so I drove through all the stop signs in my neighborood without stopping (at slow speeds mind you) limping her back home hoping to make it without having to call a tow truck and save myself from further embarrasment
I was perplexed and started a long email thread with Steve who was very prompt answering all my questions. Finally got stuck last night putting it back together as I could not even set the engine to TDC. When I was turning the nut on the fan the belt would slip, I put pressure on one side of the belt but nothing. Finally bit the bullet and called Steve who was willing to talk me through the process and share more advice than I could comprehend. By pinching the belt on both sides I was able to set my engine to TDC. Or so I thought, it took me 3 attempts to set the distributor correctly, the first 2 resulted in no starts. 2.5 hours later the car was humming along.
Anyway, I know Steve is highly regarded on this site for his expertise and I always enjoyed reading his posts but never had a first hand experience with him. I am glad I did as I was fortunate to experience what everybody has been sharing, Steve not only was knowledgeable (I expected it) but very accessible and never got frustrated with my neophyte questions. I got to tell you both the dealer and the local independant I used to go, would always get frustated when asked technical questions and would avoid answering them truthfully as if I was not worthy of receiving such knowledge.
Again thanks Steve for taking the time out of your busy day to talk me through the process. It is nice to see somebody standing behind their service especially as it was a "cheap" service not a $30K race engine rebuild.
Thank You.
