Default Springs question/ M033 vs. H/R

Hello,

I have finally started down "the slope" and have received my Koni FSD shocks. I have been doing quite a bit of reading here and have a question regarding springs. I am thinking of going with either the H/R lowering springs or the M033 springs. I was wondering if anyone here has used the H/R's with the FSD's. I have read that Koni does not recommend using lowering springs but the M033 springs will also lower the car so I am not really clear on that. I know the H/R will lower the car a little bit more but that is not my objective, so if I am better off with the M033 that is fine with me.

Also, does anyone know what the going price for the M033 's are? Lastly, will either set up require any further modification to the suspension? I thought I remembered reading that you need to install a steering rack brace or something like that with certain applications. The car is a 1995 Carrera 2. As always any input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Chris

I have H&R springs with Bilstein HDs on my 97. The H&Rs do lower the car slightly more than the M030 or M033 springs. In all honesty, I'm not entirely happy with the setup, particularly when compared to my PSS9 equipped 95.

I'd like to try my HD shocks with the M030 or M033 springs for comparison.

Chris,
I have no experience of the H/R springs, but I have just installed FSD's with MO33 springs, I can recommend them without hesitation, for me its a great set up, there are two different MO33 springs...one for 6 speed the other for tiptronic, although my cars a tiptronic I went for the 6 speed version, apparently the tiptronic spring is slightly stiffer due to the extra weight of the transmission, the 6 speed version will lower a tipronic slightly at the rear, you then adjust the front to suit. I bought my set up from Gert at Carnewal. Hope this helps..

Should have also said check your front top mounts before you buy new, I bought new ones only to find my old ones were fine, the rears on the other hand were totally shot. All parts I needed was in the kit from Gert, any other parts required you just transfer over from the old dampers, saying that I bought new bellows and stops.

I have H/R Springs with HDs and love them, I guess its preference in the end. H/R springs are a bit more aggressive I would say, if your 993 is a daily driver go with the M033. I bought mine from Gert and he suggested the H/R setup to me.

Hi Chris,

The combination of H&R and Koni's is indeed not recommended by Koni although I know some have this setup without any problems. If I understand your post you are not looking for a RS lowered ride height but more closer to the original ROW sport height?

If that's the case I would go the M033 or M030 route. The M030 are the "sport suspension springs" and a little stiffer than the M033. In combination with your Koni's both will give you a ROW sport ride height.

Steering rack brace may have been installed already if your car is a 1995 and only required of you install 18" wheels.

If your car has a standard suspension you also have the standard swaybars. SOme prefer to upgrade to thicker sways when they lower the car but it is not necessary.

Either way, a set of Koni's with M030/033 will give you a nice sporty but still comfortable ride.

Go with the M033's. Many have been very happy with the FSD/M033 combo so why risk it?

Thank you for all the replies. I am now leaning towards the M033 springs. Are the top mounts a typical "while you're in there" item? I was planning on doing the control arm bushings as well. Does anyone have an idea on price for the M033 springs? Thanks again. Chris

Also, regarding the use for my car, it is not my Dailey driver but I do use it quite a bit. I have not done a DE event in a long time but would like to a few AX events in the future. Me and my wife took the car to Saratoga this spring and had a great time. That trip is what sold me on the FSD's. I knew I wanted something a little sportier but didn't want to compromise comfort too much. Thanks

You will love the FSD for your type of driving.

Check the topmounts for cracks in the rubber. I do not see them failing a lot and if they do it will be fairly easy to spot. Do replace the A-arm bushings, even if they look ok.

Definitely do this while you're in there.

Contact FD Motorsports, they stock them and have great pricing.

I would speak to Koni to see what they suggest with their shocks.
I have had experience with a miss match between shocks and springs and it is a real issue.
They have to be compatible, spring rates with the valving, bounce and rebound of the shock.

Speak to the manufactures.

What is the spring rate of the Porsche springs................

Hello. Thank you again for all the input. I will reach out to FD tomorrow and have already emailed Carnewal regarding the M033's. Neil, Koni recommends using stock springs I would imagine the M033/030 fall into as, even though they are not stock on my car they are Porsche products. I do not know what the spring rates are for them. Thanks. Chris

I have the Koni FSD w/M033 set-up and I've been very happy.
