Now take that part you want duplicated, scan and print. Done.
This industry is quite amazing - wait until newer technologies come about so the materials will get stronger, and the precision goes up. We are just at the beginning!

Take a look at some of the really cool scanning software that is coming out - using gaming scanners. I was at a maker show last weekend, and they scanned me - the image was really good quality given it was scanned in less than a second.

Glad you chimed in on this thread. I started to respond to a similar thread as to a way to 3D print some of our hard-to-find Porsche parts. Here's the link: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ight=mgianzero
It was late one evening when I was surfing the web (how dangerous can that be?) when I came across this scanner http://www.ohgizmo.com/2013/04/03/ph...f-3d-printing/ that is still in the design phase. So I contributed to their R&D and should be receiving a scanner sometime this fall.
We should get some RL'ers together to play around with it and some others who have 3D printers to trial making some parts. This would certainly come in handy with all those targa parts that are hard to find. Guess we'll have to somehow print them out of a metal-like material to make them sturdy enough.

Thanks Quad
why not try parts.com or www.sonnenporscheoemparts.com?
I'm set on the headlamp (I think), but will file them for later. Of course, I can't imagine that I'll ever need another 993 part.....will I?

I ran the car down to my indy today, just to chat about the air conditioning and the topic turned to headlight adjustment. I told him about the discussion about adjustment of the headlights here on Rennlist.
He started to laugh and said "I hate these damn headlight adjustment *****. The light rotates on three axes inside the housing, the plastic adjustment bars get brittle and bind, if you over rotate the **** you can break the plastic. Its a glorious piece of engineering, but....whenever I work on them, I lubricate the daylights out of them and turn the ***** carefully! Its a PITA.
Its why I don't do Porsche alignments/balancing, its a PITA....you need to do tons of them to get it right and have the right tools....God Bless Steve Weiner."
Made me laugh.

On a separate note, I'd recommend dcAutomotive for used parts. http://dcauto.gotdns.com/

3D printing will definitely make hard to find parts a thing of the past, especially if an original is available for scanning.
