Talking New owner's first repair! HA

Had my p-car for a couple months almost now and finally something broke.

The power window switch on the drivers door for the passenger window has always been a little funky and loose. Well yesterday it just stopped working. And the pass. side also wouldn't work. AND I had the window half down. And the pass. door switch also didn't work. I thought, crap, I'm going to have to take it in for diagnosis.

But of course I searched here on RL first and found it's very common for those switches to break. And also that the two switches for the pass. side won't work if either is malfunctioning. So I swapped out the working switch for the driver's side with the pass side. Damn. Still didn't work. Check fuse -- yep! Replaced fuse and tried again and window rolled up.

So just ordered 3 new OEM switches. They seem pretty cheap build so no wonder they're only 12 bucks!

Thanks to the peeps here on RL I've made my first "repair"

Not sure those switches are OEM but they are close enough to the real thing for $12.

Awwww, I'm disappointed you didn't attempt the repair of the switch using a nail.

Good one Ed -- Actually I read a few threads about that and I might try it!

Yeah I thought that also but for that price and given how simple they are to replace I figured I'd risk it. Here's what I ordered.

I tried the nail fix and never worked for me. Ed, If you have had success repairing them, please share any extra insight. My passenger switch just broke.

Default Update - fixed the broken switch

Hey Ed -- took me 5 minutes to fix it with a nail. Works like new (well ... it works)

Great thread here that I followed that Brucec59 took great photos for and description of the process. I might not have even noticed what exactly broke with the switch -- it's very small.

I didn't even break out the drill (mine is a rotohammer also and is way too big for delicate work). Just used a very small screwdriver with sturdy handle. Dug a hole into the plastic where the pin broke. After a millimeter or so it breaks through to the other side. Cut the nail head off one side, turned it around so the flat end goes in the hole. Snipped the end of the nail off just enough to leave the nub. Put the switch bezel back on (which holds the pin in place). Put it back in the car. Works

I have had the same replacement switch in my car for 3+ years. They're perfectly fine.

BLT, Thanks for re-posting Brucec59's repair. Due to another post about this issue, I was trying to fix a different area! All should be good now!
