Good news! 16-year-old airbags still work as intended

As a service to you, my electronic friends, this morning I conducted an involuntary road test to answer a serious question that some have raised: whether the airbags in these ever-older cars are still functional after all these years. Although my sample size is admittedly small, being limited to just my car, I can state with the highest degree of confidence that the airbags do indeed work.
All you need to do is hit ice and center-punch a roadside tree.
The airbags were perfect, and I'm uninjured. The car, now, not so much. I didn't even have the usual benefit of a cushy snowbank to accompany my extremely brief slide across the black ice. Word to the wise (ie, those wiser than me): it is possible to encounter ice on the roadway, even at sea level in California.
As I made all the various calls I had to make from the roadside, I felt an extra pang of regret for all of you who love these cars like I do, for taking one more of these great machines out of circulation. Sorry about that (truly).
I suppose now I have to ready myself to slay the insurance company dragon. I think I'm pretty well informed (I've been around here for a number of years, after all), but any sources for comps would be much appreciated.

Glad you're safe...
Steve, always the enabler! Love it!
I hope this works out in a positive way for you. And if I can add one, single word of advice it would be "TURBO". Just sayin'.

so sorry to hear about the accident. What a bummer. You have a great attitude and after all, cars can be replaced, lives can't. After you get the insurance squared away you can start the enjoyable task of finding the perfect replacement.

Dave,
I ADMIRE your attitude!!
In case you're not already on it, past threads on insurance claims, means to establish fair market value for your car (PCA, rennlist for sale forums, actual completed sales on eBay, etc. are all good sources. Some said KBB used to be low but has recently caught up w/ true mkt values...
In any case, wish the best yet to come and perhaps a new P-car in the very near future.

Glad the car took one for the team.
Depending on how things work out re: repair or total, consider that the car could find a new home really, really , really close by and rise again as a racer or track rat.

Ken: you came to mind when I thought that the most likely use for the car, if there is going to be one at all, would be as a track day special. I'm not sure I will have the energy or inclination to do anything but that which causes me the least amount of stress and effort, but I'll keep this in the back of my head.

I love the way DE technology protects the driver. I had a similar mishap with my RS6 and was grateful that the girl protected me while sacrificing her life.
All the more reason to love our 993's.
Incidents like this give perspective to life. Helps one to appreciate the little things.

And as mentioned here before on this forum; I hope the insurance will settle this in a correct way.
