rear seatbelt retractors must die...
so, how difficult is it to replace those darn things yourself? mine is a targa, but i don't know if that matters. my mechanical skills are on par with a third grader. OK, not fair to third graders, but... would really like to be able to pick kids up from school again. (legally). thanks for any input

IMO it is very easy.
Remove 4 screws and you can pull the rear cover with speakers. The speaker wires are long enough to allow you to disconnect them. Feed the rear seat belt through each opening in the rear cover.
The seat belts are now completely exposed and can easily be removed and replaced. IIRC they are held by a single bolt each.

Do you know that if they wont retract you can pull on them very hard and smoothly and they should retract. When my kids let the retract back quickly sometimes they jam.

I've replaced both rears on my car as well, easy DIY as stated above. Pricy buggers though, paid $253.90 from Sunset in 09.
I was able to get them to work again with a good bit of fiddeling each time they jammed but needed to take them out of the car so time to replace. I was warned not to open them as I recall, some risk of injury from a very strong spring inside. PN I ordered was 993-803-021-00-70B. Don't see that there was a left or right.

Yes. Not too difficult a job, but I do not think that is the correct part number. Not all the seat belts are interchangable (targa, cab, etc.) Your car is a targa which I believe uses part #: 993-803-021-00. There should be a green tag sewn on the belt (near floor) that has part number stamped on it. I believe they are the same on both sides.

Do these seat belts actually fail? Or is it the belt just not guided into the reel properly?
