Interesting in that I was reading "Excellence Was Expected", Pub 2003, Volume III, Pg 1298 - Karl writes "The first nine of the new cars were built at the end of 1994 and production of the Turbo in 1995 would total 2457 units. Production was only slightly lower in 1996 at 2342 Turbos. Builds of 1135 and 567 in 1997 and 1998 brought the total for this model to 6,510 Turbos".

My understanding that the 1995 Turbos were built for European consumption only, 1996 and 1997 were worldwide, and 1998 has some go to the Mexican and Brazilan Markets (Porsche 993: The Essential Companion).

The numbers do not add up to the previous numbers seen -

Sources: Wikipedia -> 993 Turbo – total production across all years - 5978

Sources: Original Porsche 911 (Peter Morgan) - 1996 – 1357 USA, 2484 ROW, 1997 1048 USA, 972 ROW

Peter says that there were 1048+972 = 2020 units in 1997, but Karl says the factory made 1135 in 1997. The do not match, but perhaps its due to a difference between marketing years and calendar years.

If we add Peter's numbers up, it would appear that there were 5,861 Porsches produced for 1996 and 1997, but if you add up the Turbos in Karl's book its a total production of 6510. Ok, lets remove the 1995's and 1998's off Karls numbers, that leaves us with 3477, not even close to Pete's. They must be comparing calendar and marketing years for sure.

If i need to prove to our insurance company that there were less than 1500 1997 Turbo's made, I could use Karl's book as a reference since he claims the number is 1135.

Does anyone have a more recent copy of Karl's book to see if his numbers remained the same?

Cheers,

Mike

How would a gov't official ever figure out if you were telling the truth or not? We're all part of the Porsche family and even we can't understand which numbers are accurate and which are not.

If you just showed up with a single source that supported your <1500 count, how would they argue with you?

Given its one of the major references ever written, I guess pretty good. I will have to look into it for sure.

I am reading a Peter Morgan's - Ultimate Buyer's Guide.

98 Carrera ROW - 841
98 Carrera US - 1353
97 Turbo ROW - 2484
97 Turbo US - 1357

The Carrera numbers included narrow, wide body, rear-wheel and all wheel drive.
He did break out separately numbers for Targa, Tips and Cab.

BTW, the source (Adrian Streather: 993 The Essential Companion) states an accurate count is impossible.
More C4 Cabs made in 95 than in all the years 96,97, and 98 combined according to your reference. Doubtful.

impossible ..... for him

I am afraid but I believe more than 1500 Carrera S were produced from July 1997.
I have got the original birth certificate of mine, registered by Porsche Stuttgart through the luxembourg department of transport dated 20-06-1997.
I have this same date painted on the oil reservoir, and behind the clock.
A lot of parts have week 25/97 stamped on them.
The car has body number 1907 engraved under rear panel, under windshield, VIN is 5157 ROW
It was produced on the 20th of June, day 119 (working days here in EU), that makes 16 Carrera S cars per day (almost half for US)
3714 cars produced makes the construction ended on the beginning of Nov
If mine was 1907 produced on 20-06-97, roughly 2000 cars were 1997 and the rest 1998
Each 993 took 80 hours to finish, or 5 working days on two shifts of 8
70 x Porsche 993 per day/ 112 cars all models
I wasn't curious to knowing the origin, but fell on the info here and there, throughout the years. I wrote here what coincides

Interesting, I imported my 993 from the USA, the original window sticker shows "model year 95", but the first service invoice (PDI, only 38 miles) shows 31 march 1994. So what does this mean?
