@Ken,
I never seem to have much luck with just a repair. I never owned anything drivable that wasn't modified after a while. Just can't keep my hands off engines.
I envy your 3.8. I'm sure the extra 35hp can be felt. Unfortunately, the sensation doesn't last long and you're longing for more.
Taxation on gas in Germany is app. 87%. Acc. to Wiki, the median income is ~ Euro 16.-/h so 98 octane is 1.78 Euro/Liter. That's a bit more than 1/10th but it's only 1 Liter. Multiply that by 3.87 and it's pretty expensive.
Take care,
Ed

I've replaced the alternator, clutch @ 90K, some suspension bits, and not much else.

Rich CLEARLY has set the benchmark for "high mileage." Mine is but a babe in the woods by comparison. I only hope my good fortune continues

Not to mention $850 for a front ventilation fan (there are 2), mixing servos at about $400 per (there are 4, I think?), new CCU over $1000 (or rebuild for about $350).

Still, worth every bit of what it costs in my most humble of opinions.

Do you have links?
Good grief. It's not a CostCo contest. But if I had trouble with the a/c in my car, approach 20 years old, I wouldn't go to the parts counter at the dealer and order new old stock.

I have at least a full system in parts on my shelves, if anyone wants to pay me $4K, I'll hand 'em over. Hell, make it $3K and I'll throw in the bent lines for a C4S/Turbo ... that stuff is just taking up space and it's hell for the cleaning lady to dust twice a week ... : )

Go into the way back machine when it was introduced, and the all-time low was nearly flipped. A Euro at 1.4-to-$1 would make gas seem cheap............

I always look at it as how much it labor it takes to buy, based on a median income. So that's ~$20/hr. right now. Equates to about 1/5 hr. per gal. How's that compare to elsewhere? Let's omit the difference in taxation for the time being.

(Not sure why you can't merely replace guides on a top end, if that's all that's worn. My $30K 3.8L has ~35 more HP than stock. Hardly anything anyone can feel.)
It's "knowing" that counts.

ps. Larry's 3.8 went across the market recently. Word is, someone exported it to Europe? Money'd up peoples sure does love dem cubic centipedes. All .2 of 'em. Boy howdy! Ain't no replacement fir displacement.

My 95 C4 has 120kmi on it now, only had to do a couple things in the 5 years of ownership.
tires, every year, brake pads in the back this year, 2 30k services. First year, had to recharge the AC. Oh, this year, she also got a new windshield.

Everything else was purly just for me, like the 18in wheels, bumperette delete, and some other things.

I've driven this car up and down the entire west coast, drive it to work 2-4 times a week, have a lot of fun .riving it on weekend trips. The car has never let down or disappointed once. Ok, there was one let down when I took the Wife on a wine tour, we got to the other side of the mountains in 101deg weather hit the AC only to find out it didn't work (ie the recharge).

Reminds me of renting a car in Hawaii years ago. Drove it for a day or two, top down (Jeep or something) then the weather turned to that 110% humidity and "it'll rain any minute now" ... that's when we discovered that the a/c just plain didn't work ... now I remember, it was a Chrysler Misfire ... I mean "Crossfire" (Based on a Benz something, SLK or other) and hell, it was hot with the roof up and the "won't work with the top down" a/c turned out to be also a "won't work with the top up" a/c. The rental company wasn't interested and had nothing but cheap replacements. I took it to an auto place and had them recharge the refrigerant, look for leaks (UV leak die -- I think they found a leak) and they had it back on the road for some flat fee, maybe $200, which to my astonishment, the rental company reimbursed after I got home from the holiday.

It made me think a couple of things: worst of all is that there are probably a lot of cars that leak refrigerant and the owners just get them recharged and it's a given, second, we have such low expectations that when the a/c was near useless, I didn't think much of it until it proved it was entirely useless and finally, it's become an accepted thing that rental cars and rental companies are junk, so when a rental company actually did the ethical thing, I was surprised. I think the US sports fans would call that "oh and three" ... or "oh for three" ... never could figure that out ...
