Default Ready for a new Distributor Belt?

I have a couple of distributors ready to be shipped out. The belt has been replaced and the bearings inspected.
I will also include a new “o” ring for shaft .
I am willing to send them out before I receive yours, as long as you
promise to do the swap as soon as you receive mine and send the old one back.
For anyone thinking about having your belt replaced this will save you some down time.

Mine lasted 157k miles. When I removed the distributor, I lightly touched the belt and it broke, so I would say replace it before this.

Mine was almost 16 years old but with a mere 72,470 kilometers (45K miles) on it and it was in very good condition with no signs of breaking even after I had it out and folded it over.

Seized bearings would cause it to fail, if not mileage.

My original Indy(Joel Reiser) reccomended changing it at my first service...about 64K. He felt it was a wear item, and better safe than sorry. He did a similar exchange for a complete rebuilt unit-similar cost IIRC.

Do all 993's have the vent hose from the dizzy housing? The premature wear/failure was from the ozone created by the arching in the dizzy caps-according to Joel.

$175 + $30 is a great deal compared to that of our shop in Taipei, $400 for the belts plus $50 labor.

Yes. And I believe the later 964s too.

The belt and pin are under $15. Unless they are including caps and rotors, what else are they installing that is $400...and even then that is far too much just for parts.

Default I have a theory about the distributor belt.

In a DYI instruction I read once the author mentions the secodary rotor bearing showing signs of scalding. Seems to me if the bearing is adding enough resistance to scald it is adding enough to break the belt. For this reason I add a few drops of oil to the rotor shaft assembly every time I replace the rotor cap. Maybe this will forestall the belt issue for a while. I do test the belt every few months by disconnecting the primary distributor coil and run the car on the belt driven distributor.
Andy :-)

No, they are not including caps and rotors.

$400 = total rebuild cost for 2 disties (tearing apart 2 disties, replacing old belts and pins with new ones, and putting everything back together.)

$50 = labor for taking out 2 disties from engine bay and, after above rebuild is done, putting them back in the engine bay.

If the bearings are bad/noisy, have you sourced the bearings?

Cheers,

Mike
