Clutch replacement cost!
So I'm thinking I might have to replace the clutch in my C4S soon. The car has almost 60,000 miles on it so I think it might be time as it has a few issues. What are you guys spending on average on a clutch replacement? I think I would like to stay with the OEM setup as I don't want to worry about any stalling issues with the LWF (unless you can convince me otherwise). I think I paid around $3k (I live in Calgary) for the clutch replacement in my 964, so I'm guessing the 993 will be similar!
Thanks in advance!

60K is early for a clutch replacement on these cars. What are your symptoms? Check for oil leaks by the bellhousing it may be your RMS leaking, clutch still might be good. Costs are comparable to the 964. Depending on the shop they may want to drop the engine for an AWD car. It can be done without it but it's more of a pain.
Definitely go LWF!! There are ZERO stalling issues on 96+ cars.

I have a 96 C4S and I upgraded to a lwf and rs spec from fdmotorsports. I haven't had any issues with stalling. It is a bit noisy but it is not nearly as loud as some people made me think it would be. I think the kit was $1750 and included the rs clutch, lwf, pressure plate, rear main seal, rs clutch guide tube, throw out bearing and clutch fork bearings. I installed it myself using the manuals and rennlist for assistance.

Derek, whatever set-up you go with, check with Sunset or your favourite Porsche discounter for pricing. I've seen OEM Porsche pricing from aftermarket suppliers that was higher than those from Porsche themselves. Shop around!
BTW, I'll be doing likewise...OEM set-up when the time comes. Make sure you do it all while you are in there. Its not worth saving $15 on a seal when the labour to get to it is numerous hours.

Just go to FD Motorsports which is where I got my clutch kit.

I'll put up the high print here, $4100!
my dmf started making very bad sounds last spring, very, very bad sounds. opinion was 50/50 on staying together or exploding. I wanted to make the pca 3 day track event in june and didn't want to risk a hole in the side of the case, so I paid a shop top dollar to finish the work before the event.
they had no issues with telling me parts are marked up 25%, I even paid 9.95 per quart for oil.
they installed a lwf kit and the car is much more fun to drive.
all the soundproofing material has been taken out and only the rs carpet is in place so while idling the tranny sounds like a bucket of bolts. kind of annoying sometimes but I don't have to drive it in traffic except to get to the track so in my case the fun out weighs the noise.
they used a 964 turbo pressure plate, the pedal takes more effort but pickup is super quick and solid, could be the best part of the change.
also, car had 75k and the clutch could have gone 15k more miles easy.

The 95 stalled with a LWF.
96s have no problem with the LWF. Go for it, it's one of the best upgrades and almost worth doing even if you don't have to do the clutch.

Thanks for the reply. Not 100% sure the clutch is gone as it doesn't slip or anything however it sometimes chatters a bit when gearing down. Also, I find that I need to give the car a bit more gas getting going from a stop because it feels like its going to stall if I dont!

Derek, sounds like you are looking for total cost with labor
A good amount of the price will depend on what other maintenance is done at the time...
It is hard to pin down total unless very specific on what will be done.
Also, as you likely know some shops won't want you to bring your own parts
All of that said, if paying shop parts pricing along with labor, it should be in the $3K range as your 964's job was, plus or minus a bit depending

Another data point:
I recently paid a mechanic $3,500 cash (ie, i didn't pay tax; my other option was $3,900 with a card or check) for installation of a new clutch and lwfw, pressure plate, rear main seal, etc., new power steering belt, FDM SSK and Golden Rod (I provided parts), Brad Penn oil change, and repaired a window switch and replaced a brake light bulb. I thought $3.5 was reasonable.
Also: A clutch release fork, I believe. Part was ~$225 IIRC.

Sounds sort of like a combination of a diesel truck (maybe a garbage truck) and like you're lugging the engine. It's not obtrusive at all. Mine only does it under load, or at idle when HOT.

If you do this, it's a great time to do plugs, wires, PS belt, etc, while the motor is out...so I'd personally budget for that, if you don't DIY.
I keep thinking mine will need it soon, but at 72K, still seems to be fine. I'm looking forward to getting my engine stand out when I do!
