Had a clutch put in for $3500 about 3 years ago,of course that's with a normal flywheel added to.I can't figure out why people on here are replacing their clutches with so low of miles on them 40k - 70k. Had no problems with mine even at 120k just decided better safe then sorry.

I ask 3 different porsche shop mechanics and got
-dmf was designed to not explode if it failed so don't worry
-dmf's do fail and if you try to play on track with it bad things might happen
-if the dmf has separated you can drive it but you risk throwing pieces through the case

bottom line for me was pay now or risk paying a whole bunch more money later.
when it was taken apart you could turn the 2 big parts of the flywheel opposite directions a little more than an inch. the theory was it kept catching itself and jumping ahead causing the rough idle.
I don't know for sure cause I've never tried it with a new dmf. but in the end the problem was fixed by replacing it.
My car throws a misfire code and has been attributing it to a failing dmf. But it has been three years. I am starting to hear the coffee can rattle, so will have to bite the bullet soon.

There cant be very many people that will EVER be able to relate to the miles you have driven on your 993.

He who dies with the least amount of miles on their 993, still dies!

Keep on driving!!

LOVE this quote!!

I've owned my 993 since September -and cringe as you may, have put 8,000 miles on it thus far. Still haven't broken the 100k mark yet.

But I'd love to be its keeper clear to 200k miles!

Alas, sometimes you have no place/time/reason to drive the things. As noted in Juha's winter thread, I moved the 4S outside and parked it in the rain today while I work in the shop. That's as far as it's moved in maybe six weeks. I think I'm still on the same tank of gas as I put in sometime during the summer. Seems like the odo is frozen at 144K..........

Amazingly, I am at 110,000 miles and my clutch is only just now is starting to slip on fast acceleration. I realize that there are variables once the mechanic gets in there, but does anyone have an update on range of cost or perhaps better, a range of hours for OEM replacement? I am in Los Angeles. Many Thanks, Mark

LWF/RS clutch kit, with all the parts is about $1750.

Average shop book time to install, about 15 hours, at about $100/hr = $1500.

Plus, the "while I'm in there, I might as well replace ________" cost.

Your results may vary, but expect at least $3K, probably more like $4K or more, depending on your car, ambition, and financial situation.

Thanks GBD. Is the LWF/RS kit standard OEM for the car, or is that an upgrade you suggesting? Thanks, Mark

It is an upgrade, for sure, though still Porsche parts. I think it was OEM on the RS cars, but I could be wrong. Allows quicker throttle response as the lighter flywheel removes weight and inertia required to spool up the engine. Also the LWF is sturdier than the OEM one, which means it may last longer. There can be a little noise at idle via gear lash, but this is normal, and in my opinion, a fair trade-off for less mass, increased response and sturdier parts. Since you're local, you're welcome to meet up with me and take my ride for a spin and see for yourself.

If your clutch is starting to go, this is the option I'd choose. Use the search button and you can read oodles on this subject.

If you're looking for a great mechanic in L.A., PM me and let me know. I've shopped them all and found the best.

FWIW, the DMF has a lifespan of about 100K. YMMV. You can usually find a good used one with low mileage right here from other RL's who have upgraded to the LWF.

You can also buy a SACHS clutch kit on Amazon for about $550. You will then have to find a mechanic to install it. Some will do it, some won't (they like to sell you the parts.)
Sachs Clutch Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive Sachs Clutch Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive

You can also buy a new DMF on fleabay for around $700. The part number is DMF013 manufactured by LUK. These are the same parts your mechanic will use.

Personally I would never buy a used clutch package. And there is no average wear for a clutch, since it really depends on the user and conditions. Some last 35K, some last 135K. Many mechanics will allow you to bring your own parts, many will not. YMMV is indeed right.

I wouldn't either. The clutch package mentioned above is brand new.
