Questions from a New owner of a 993
Wow. That sounds good to say, "...New owner of a 993"
So the car was dropped off this week and it wouldn't start. I assumed that since it was not driven much over the past few years the battery was weak, so I replaced it this morning. It started up perfectly. I sighed with relief!
On to my questions...
1. I need to get the state's vehicle inspections completed here in Houston and the service rep who sold the battery told me it wouldn't pass because I just changed the battery and advised me to drive it around for a week and bring it back. Any truth to that or should I just get it done elsewhere? I do not want the ding of a failed inspection on my carfax.
2. The radio locked up and I don't have the code card. Where can I get the code? I know the dealer and becker can get it for fee, but is there a way to get it for free? Its a CDR-210 CD player.
3. When I try to start the car, I sometimes have to arm and disarm the alarm first. Any ideas why?
Thanks in advance.

Hi NP,
First off, welcome to the board!
Secondly, HUGE congrats, man!
It truly is a great feeling to own what I think is one of Porsche's finest incarnations of the venerable 911s. You must soon post pics of your victory or you risk being reprimanded
On #1, I call BS. A battery replacement is simply that. Keep tabs on it as I have seen dying batteries kill an alternator (and vice versa), but there is no reason I can think of that would merit this guy's caution. Get the check done elsewhere. BTW, on smog checks be certain your car is hot hot hot! Not just "warmed up" as you drive to the smog-check guy, but the engine is nice and hot! I don't know what smog regs are like where you are, but in Cali they are very tight, and mine has failed to pass before, only to pass very cleanly when I got the engine temp (and cat temp, really) up there.
#2: other than the dealer, dunno. Try google?
#3: welcome to the Immobilizer. It is a quirky alarm system that Porsche fitted on these cars and many folks have issue with them, if not hate them outright. Someone here with an Immobilizer can give you the ins/outs of dealing with its quirks.
Looking forward to seeing you more on the board ...and don't forget to post a pic

Of course a battery change will cause a power interruption (unless you took steps to avoid it) that will reset the readiness codes. Search for the drive cycle routine, and give it your best shot.

Sorry Edward but the battery guy was right. Replacing your battery does reset the "readiness indicators" of the OBDII system. We have several threads on here covering the "BMW OBDII Drive Cycles", I'll link to one of them in a few min.
Congrats on the new car.

Long thread but a lot of good info
A thread I posted on what the tester actually sees.

Arming and disarming has always been the case with my 96 unless you leave the key in the ignition. I guess that's just the way it is.
I recommend keeping backup batteries in your car for the remote. If the battery dies, you can get in with the key but you can't go anywhere.

w/r/t the immobilizer, if the car is unlocked via remote, but not started shortly (less and a minute, I think), the immobilizer kicks in. To solve: put the key in the ignition & turn to the "on position". Hold the unlock button on the remote until the red LED light on top of the door (by the side view mirror) flashes quickly. This takes about 1-2 seconds of holding the remote button. The car should start then. Congrats on the new car!!

Contests, but you need to post pics or no one here will believe you!
1. I believe there is some truth to the battery statement. Can't remember exactly but has something to do with (readiness???) codes being reset when the batt gets replaced and driving it around for a while resets them.
2. I'm of no use to you here.
3. Immobilizer will disable from starting if it has sat for a certain period of time in the disarmed (unlocked) mode. Simply arm and disarm (lock and unlock) the car and it will start. Other option is to turn the key to the #2 position, hit the alarm button on your remote and it will kill the immobilizer.
4. Remember, pics or you're playing make believe!

This worked for my radio last week - there are a couple ones on the web - this one had the right code first.

This was one of the best investments I made for my 993 - a cheap and easy OBDII reader:
Any time my car is due for state inspection I check the readiness codes with it, so I don't get that dreaded FAILED note on my CarFax.
