Daytime Running Lights--DRL

There have been several threads in various forums on this topic, but in reading them, I didn't get a clear picture of exactly how to do this modification on a 993. Here is what worked for me:

1. Remove relay 31 store it--you won't be replacing it.

2. Make a jumper wire about two inches long, with a male spade connector on each end.

3. Using the jumper wire, jump pin 3 to pin 5 in the socket for relay 31. These numbers are hard to read, but with a flashlight, you can see them next to the pin sockets.

Now the fog lights will be lighted when the ignition is in the "on" position, so they can function as Daytime Running Lights. They will still function as fog lamps, too, but will go out when the headlights are on high beam, as required by law in some jurisdictions. If you want the fog lights on even when the headlights are on high beam, just remove relay 34, put it away, and jump pins 3 and 5 in that relay socket, too.

This circuit is protected by a 15-amp fuse in slot 14 of the CE panel, so you don't need to fuse the jumper wires.

Good info, but do the rest of the lights go on, too? I mean the marker lights, license plate lights, etc.

No, just the fog lights, so not DRL to meet legal requirements in Canada, perhaps.

Thanks Bobby, great info!

Thanks for the info. Made me a jumper and did it today. Works great. I usually pull my fogs on for DRL's, when I can remember to.

replace the Fogs with a set of LED and it'll look real current.

Did the DRLs and fogs on with high beams this morning. It took less than 10 minutes. Very happy now! Thanks Bobby for the DIY!

Good info - thanks

People never cease to amaze me, the car forums for cars with daytime running lights have many threads about how to turn them off, and here we have one about how to add them to a 993.

Your large shiny Porsche can easily be seen in daylight. Adding lights makes no measurable difference. (NHTSA Study 2008).

Why bother?

+1
The add'l current draw puts more wear on the alternator and electrical system, which in turn is driven by the engine (small, I know, but everything counts!).

Not sure where you are getting the "large shiny Porsche" from. The 993 is a toy in comparison to almost everything around it and looks like a skateboard in traffic. I think the DRL are dumb for my 5,000 lb SUV - but a good idea for a 993.

I don't know why I want DRLs but I do! ;)

Take a look at this Phillips website ... a very cool photoshop feature for DRL's

Anything to make our cars more visible to the SUV crowd is a good thing

I think aftermarket LEDs look terrible in 99% of the applications.

As far as DRLs, it depends on the car and the lights. Some look cool and some don't. I personally like fog lights as DRL and have wired all my cars that way.

I think it really depends on the car ... and quality of the LED system
