Belt Change time, fan override, Parts list, tips questions ect
Going to set aside a day or two next month and take care of a few small things on the car.
belts dont show major wear but they are probably due or over due. last done at 30k service and that was some time ago, more than 5 years. 45,000 mi now...
the car already has pulley update so i need:
Alternator Belt 999 192 343 50 9.5x760
Fan Belt 999 192 338 50
A/C Belt 999 192 363 50 13x1085
Belt Tension Sensor 993 106 035 00
3x Pan Head screws 900 119 026 02
Should I order an extra shim or two? (4 different part numbers across both shim types :-/ )
Belt Tension Cricket, sold it along with my 944, need to buy another - what should the value of the belt tensions be?
regarding the belt tension sensor, these things self destruct, what about instead of replacing it, just removing it all together. I could make a jumper to close or leave the circuit open at the connector, and secure the wire end?
also going to order SC wiper switch 911-613-321-01, for oil fan override. My understanding is you slit an X into the precut location on the instrument panel and the switch will simply pop in there. i'll fish the G12 wire leads from the CCU to the switch location by pushing a snake (thin accelerator cable) through the slit so it drops down and i can grab it below the dash without having to reach up.
thats the plan, open to suggestions and tips...

some slight issues with your part numbers.
Alternator
999 192 343 50 (760mm)
fan belt
999 192 338 50
AC
999 192 363 50
I wouldn't delete the fan belt sensor. It will give you plenty of warning before it fails and they don't fail often...relatively cheap also.
As for the belt tension, I'd say you can forget the kriket and aim for about 1/4" deflection in the middle of the belt length from crank to fan.

Thank you Andreas, i'll update this thread with some photos and posts as we go.
the belt squeaking i posted about a few weeks ago, oddly enough went away on its own? when i get the belts off i'll spin the alternator by hand and verify its not the alternator bearings.

I enjoy using a proper tool for the belts as it it cheap. Spec is:
Tension:
Cold engine: 15 to 23 scale increments
Engine at operating
temperature: 20 to 28 scale increments

Put the fan switch into the lower center
Console - no cutting required, it should just slip in. One of the best things you can do four your 993 is keeping it cool - and this mod works great!

Agree with Mike J re. locating the fan over ride switch. Very easy to do, no cutting and simple to fish the wire there.
First mod I did 8 years ago.
Good luck

thanks guys,
you may have swayed me. i was leaning towards the dash switch because dropping the snake through the little cut out i thought would be easy and the switch was 'new'. all the 944 hazard light switches im finding on ebay are JUNK.
e9stibi,
the tool your referring to is the regular napa cricket?

As long as one retains the two belt system, the POS "tension" wheel (sensor) on the fan belt is essential to alert one of a fan belt failure - to not be so advised is to risk cooking the engine!!
Using the RS pulley/hub, one converts to a single belt making the above sensor redundant: I did so and installed a jumper as you describe ..... if the belt fails, the alternator stopping lights the dash up like a Xmas tree - enough to warn of cooling fan failure.

Some advice: save your old belts and stash them somewhere in the front trunk. My dad was once stranded for a few days in CO due to a broken fan belt on a Friday night. Couldn't get the part until Tuesday. Fortunately, he wasn't in a hurry. You may also want to label them.

Hi Kevin,
I don't know if the pulley upgrade uses these, but when my mechanic replaced my belts he wished I had brought new socket head cap screws. We were able to re-use them but made a note for the next belt change, to purchase new ones.
Interesting the Katalog lists them as "panhead" screws.

I've always known these to be called socket head (hex) cap screws.

Thanks Al, called sunset and added them.
---edit---
deleted the 911SC wiper switch and added the late 944 hazard switch.
