OT things to do on a West Coast driving trip
 

My wife and I are taking the 993 for a long trip down the West Coast. We'll get to Portland around June 23rd and head south from there. I doubt we will get further than Monterey but who knows. The plan is to head home around the end of the first week of July. I'm sure there are a million things to see but I would appreciate any recommendations for Porsche events, wineries, routes, etc.

Definitely make the push down to Big Sur, and the Lost Coast shouldn't be missed either.

Anyway you can delay your trip until the week of August 13th-20th?It is car week here in Monterey and if you have never been you should come,if you can.It is the Largest car gathering in the World.
So much to see and do, you really can't do it all in one week.I think Shelby is the Featured car at the Laguna Seca Historic Car races this year.Also Pebble Beach Concours,Concours Italiano,The Quail,Concour on The Avenue in Carmel and about 7 different car auctions.
Any kind of car you have ever dreamed about,will be here driving around the area.Must do this at least once in your life,if you love cars!!

Dundee near Portland has lots of winery, check out White Rose or Archery Summit. If you are driving via the coastal highway , check out the small town Yachats, Oregon and visit Cape Perpetua

What timing!

Memorial weekend... (starting early Fri. morning) wifey and I are flying (from NY) to San Francisco, renting a car and driving down the west coast to Monterey, Big Sur, etc.

From what others have told me / from my 'research', it is a drive to "immerse yourself in".

Chez Panisse in Berkeley .. probably the best meal you will eat in a lifetime. You will need to make reservations now if you can. If not, try the cafe upstairs ..

.. and if you're going south of Monterey .. make the drive to Hearst Castle and take a tour .. if you're into U.S. power history, W.R. Hearst was the real deal. Oh, watch Citizen Kane before you leave .. :roflmao:

While Napa and Sonoma deservedly get lots of attention, the East Bay/Livermore Valley has some wonderful wineries.

Yosemite is a little far from the coast but the 120 from it to SF is pretty fun to drive. Yosemite Bugs Hostel is a nice place to stay. Don't let the name scare you. It's not the type of hostel I heard about and it's not a typical hotel either. It's more like a cabin type, by itself on the side of the road, super clean, decent bed, friendly staff, in room bath, a/c, food available from 7am to 11pm, and affordable, about 25 miles from Yosemite. We found this due to the last minute plannig but it turned out I liked it more than a typical hotel.
